I hate the sound and music.....I'd rather just leave the movie on mute the whole time.

OK my favorite scene in a movie due to the soundtrack is in LotR the Fellowship of the Rings. Its a small part, that wasn't even supposed to be in the film according to the content on the 4 disk extended edit. It's when everyone is on The Bridge of Khazad Dum and it begins to break apart.

The excitement of the music.. the chanting... the suspense of the images... All the looks of fear on the actors faces. Just as they make it accross music switches quickly to the upbeat prideful main theme...
I feel like the character Bastian, in The Neverending Story- during the scene when hes reading about Atreyu successfuly making it by the test of inner doubt or something- and he jumps up shouting YESSSSS when Atreyu makes it!! ha ha Thats what I did the 1st tiem i saw this LotR scene.ERR i cant wait for the extended edit on blu!!! Its going to sound so good!!!

What would the Star Wars Saga be without the outstanding scores by the
great John Williams?????

There are countless moments throughout the Star Wars Saga that only really work with the score!

A match made in heaven!

I also like the Ang Lee's Hulk soundtrack by Danny Elfman.

Wall-E has a good one too, as do so many other movies.

Soundtracks are supremely important IMHO!

The Dark Knight soundtrack was awesome. I remember downloading it shortly after seeing it in theatres and blasting it in my car while driving really really fast

I thought the music in The Book of Eli really enhanced some of the scenes, particularly near the end of the movie. Definitely got some chills.

Also, the rock music that comes on the at very end of The Hurt Locker had me doing this:

the soundtrack is half the movie for me, it either makes it or breaks it. Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park to me are the best examples of how the score can really help the movie go to the next level.

I agree with the OP, it can make a scene's experience become a whole lot more memorable when well put together. It can help build suspense and chills when in a horror movie, it can help you relax when viewing slow scene, it can help get your heart pumping when in an action scene. The soundtrack is just as important as the actors

It can also make a scene more comical. One of my most recent favorites is the scene from (500) Days of Summer with the Hall & Oates song. I thought this movie had a great soundtrack. While dissimilar from the scores mentioned in most of the threads before mine, I thought the songs added a great deal to the scenes of the movie.

I used to listen to those constantly. Still do from time to time.

I recall reading once that Halloween (1978) was played for a test audience lacking its score (or having an unfinished score). The test audience was underwhelmed. After they heard it with the finished score, it became the hit we all know and love. I don't know if that story's true, but it seems plausible.

I'm the same way. I think it plays a huge part on what makes a movie.

Here's another great soundtrack: -

to me, one of the most memorable film scores is Alan Silvestri's work on Predator

I'm a big film score fan, listening to them incredibly often (I sometimes get comments from relatives I should listen to 'real' music, whatever that means). There are too many composers to list I really love, and it has even come to loving soundtracks without having seen the movie.

From the works of Bernard Herrmann (Psycho, Twilight Zone show) to Danny Elfman (Pee Wee Herman's Big Adventure, '80s Batman), I'm also a big fan of memorable soundtracks. A lot of good suggestions are up already, but I'll mention a sub topic to consider.... how about the memorable music in movies about music? Here are a couple:

- Immortal Beloved's Ode to Joy scene with an abused young Beethoven lying in the water looking at the stars

- Holly Hunter's performance in The Piano

Sunshine - especially during the space jump scene, absolutely incredible. I use to fire up the blu-ray all the time just to listen to that track! (they used it in some trailer for another movie where people start going blind.. not sure if it made it into the movie).

Dark City

That lifeguard movie with Kostner and Krucher has a great soundtrack.

Flash Gordon
