Default VERY new to speakers. Question

I've never owned speakers for my system. And I hear I'm not getting my money's worth if I don't own speakers. I want to really get the most of my money. My question is. Is this a good system? If not, please link me up to a good system. With all the works, receivers, or whatever I need. Keep in mind I am a huge newby to this.

Here's what I was looking at http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-SC-B...1211605&sr=1-4

I don't know too much about speakers, but one thing I did notice about the system you selected is that it seems as if the speaker cables are proprietary....so, if that's the case, you can only use that speaker wire, and if they aren't long enough or you damage them in any way, you can't just go out and buy your own. I don't own the set so I'm not 100%, just going by user reviews on Amazon (which we all know aren't the most reputable ). Maybe there's a way to use normal speaker wire to fit into those adapters at the end

I really don know much about this particular system, but I would recommend saving your money and purchasing separate components.

Is space an issue for you? I can't remember what your room looks like, but if space is tight, then I'm sure you can get a nice system recommended by others on here. But if you have the space for it, the best route is to build a quality system, piece by piece as you can afford it.

Start with a nice set of towers, then get a center, surrounds.... and so on. When you finish, you'll have a much better setup than a HTIB system, plus, you learn a lot and it's fun to learn along the way. Check into Polk, Energy, Klipsch, Infinity, etc for great, affordable speakers.

Just to give you an idea, here's an affordable Polk setup from Newegg

Polk Monitor 60's

Polk CS1

Polk Monitor 30's

Polk PSW10

So that right there is a pretty decent 5.1 setup that will definitely outperform the HTIB system, for only $450 (the last thing you'll need is a receiver). So if you have the chance, audition some speakers and find what type of speakers you like (all brands sound different). If you don't have the opportunity, then any of the brands I named will be great performers for the price, and you don't really need to audition because they all sound nice.

They'll especially sound badass if you're coming from TV speakers!

I'm going to assume that you already have a Blu-ray player based on your collection of 59 movies. Perhaps this is currently connected to your TV. If so, why are you looking at an HTiB that includes a Blu-ray player? You don't provide us with any many details, so I'm totally making assumptions.

If the above is true, then you'll need a Receiver and some speakers. I would start with 2 front towers with the money you have to invest, and then build into that as time progresses. Polk speakers are probably the most cost-effective speakers one can buy and there are always deals to be had on them from many sources. Check out the Polk Thread!

You may be chomping at the bit to get a full sourround package right away, but going the HTiB route is not the way to do it. Build it slowly and build it right. You'll be much more satisfied in the end. I guarentee it!

Congratulations on finding this site....There are many people here who know the ins and outs of Home Theater (HT) and enjoy helping in creating a truly wonderful experience ( hopefully without ) spending on things you don't want or need........

Here's my advice.... First off ( and this is the hardest part) be patient and do the research before pulling the trigger.

2 of the other things that need consideration are the size of the room in question and the budget you'll be working with (It'll grow, believe me). Sometimes it pays off to start small and work your way up as budget increases. I personally wouldn't purchase that Panasonic HT because it doesn't allow for future upgrades and limit's the (wire) runs to the speakers. Also the amplifiers built into the main unit wouldn't support most after market speaker systems (probably your first upgrade).

Another point is your statement about wanting the works.... What exactly is that? It's different things for different people you know. Some have HT's that are mostly in the digital domain with Wi-Fi ,streaming and gaming consoles. Others have blown out systems with Turntables (yes people still use them) and analog tape decks. The choices are endless.

So the bottom line is the more info you can give the better the advice you shall receive...... and welcome to the site

Thanks a lot dude. But would any receiver work..? How do I know if the receiver would work with the speakers?

For receivers I would look into Onkyo, Pioneer, Sony, Yamaha and Denon. You'll want to make sure that it decodes HD Audio (which virtually all receivers do nowadays).

And any speaker will work with any receiver. You just connect speaker wire to the binding terminals on the back of the speakers and on the back of the receiver. If you can, try to find an Onkyo 605 or something comparable. There was a guy selling one in excellent condition on here about a month ago for $200 shipped.

I hope I did this copy and paste right, I was using my PS3 to try it.

Here is a nice deal, an Denon 1610 and Klipsch speaker set for $599 on amazon. The price show they cost more, but if you put them both in the cart, the price will change to 599 for both.
