Start with a nice set of towers, then get a center, surrounds.... and so on. When you finish, you'll have a much better setup than a HTIB system, plus, you learn a lot and it's fun to learn along the way. Check into Polk, Energy, Klipsch, Infinity, etc for great, affordable speakers.

Just to give you an idea, here's an affordable Polk setup from Newegg

Polk Monitor 60's

Polk CS1

Polk Monitor 30's

Polk PSW10

So that right there is a pretty decent 5.1 setup that will definitely outperform the HTIB system, for only $450 (the last thing you'll need is a receiver). So if you have the chance, audition some speakers and find what type of speakers you like (all brands sound different). If you don't have the opportunity, then any of the brands I named will be great performers for the price, and you don't really need to audition because they all sound nice.

They'll especially sound badass if you're coming from TV speakers!
Thanks a lot dude. But would any receiver work..? How do I know if the receiver would work with the speakers?
