We watched MI3 on BD, then he put in pirates curse of the black pearl on dvd for a few minutes and his dvd player was hooked up via hdmi also, there was no difference, sureley not a 1,000 dollar difference. Gosh I'm kinda jaded towards blu-ray now.

Ive compared them side by side with the same few BluRay and Standard movies and here is what i found. The Panasonic is nice and its a very close call, but the Sony has better definition and upscales std DVDs much much better. Motion seems more fluid with the Sony as well. Sony does not play CDs, but i dont care b/c i have an audio setup that i would much rather listen to anyway, this is just for films. The panasonic is much lower in build quality, Sony wins here by 10 fold. Much nicer build, heavier, silent operation (Panny sounds like a pc disk drive), nicer remote, menus, looks and such. Im completely unbiased as i was looking forward to the Panasonic, but ending up with the Sony. Plus its a few hundred cheaper which doesnt hurt. After spending a week with both playing movies every night and comparing same scenes between them i am returning the Panasonic. For reference I have a Panasonic TX-50PX60U Plasma TV and use RAM Electronics HDMI cables (pretty sweet performance, might want to check them out) |

The Sony looks really nice...and is built a bit stouter than the other released BD players....but its no were near as nice as there original dvd players for build quality.
The Philps loads faster...and plays the movie quicker....except for Speed ![]() The Sonys resume movie feature leaves something to be desired...and will not work if you eject the disc or shut the player off. The Sony sounds noticibly better than the Philips via analog PCM audio and the P/Q is sometimes better on close ups....but I think backgrounds look slightly sharper on the Philips player. This is comparing on a 110 " screen. I would rate the overall P/Q as even....although they look different enough that my 14 year old can instantly see the difference. The audio via analog at least....is clearly fuller and richer on the Sony. And the playability including speed and the resume function are better on the Philips. Functionality...Philips P/Q... overall even but yet different. A/Q....Sony Looks...Sony by a mile. |

Forgot to mention that my wife said that the player she picked up from Best Buy was the last one and they were about to place it on display but we got it first. They sold out quickly their first batch of Sony players.

^^Wow. The glowing word and shock and awe is rolling in, just as was expected.
1080p/24 and 480i over HDMI are some features as well on that machine. ![]() Shock and awe! ![]() ![]() |

This week, they're supposed to get the Sonys in and I have to make a decision -- keep the Panasonic or get the Sony. I've looked at the Sony in action at Best Buy and Circuit City. I've read the reviews and it seems to have essentially the same PQ as the Panny.
As long as it's not a step down in PQ that's all I care about. I couldn't care less about audio format support (I'd have to upgrade my receiver and speakers to take advantage of 7.1 DTS/DD lossless). It would be nice if it had CD/SACD playback, but my Denon still takes care of that and I'll be keeping it a while longer. I will miss the power-off with resume function on the Panny, which the Sony doesn't have. (I wonder if they can fix that with a future firmware update?) Anyway, this for sure won't be my last BD player. I'm sure that it will last me until G2 or G3. |

Looks like this player is a dud.
We were watching Superman Returns (crappy looking video I might add) and 28 minutes in we lost video but the audio kept playing. Rebooted, unplugged restarted...nothing but audio. This was through the HDMI to a DVI port on the Ruby. Oh well, back to the store it goes. Not going to mess with it any longer. I wish the Pioneer would get here and if it's not all it might cracked up to be, I will look into getting another PS3 or something... Don't know. |

Crap. Kinda of a let down. I was hoping that the pioneer would be faster and set itself apart from the Sony. And with the problems I have had with the Sony (at least the one I have). One of the cheaper units or another PS3 are sounding alot better right now. ![]() |

No problems here so far...
I've been watching DVD's on it and its been great. The upscaling is really good on my 40" XBR2. Super pleased. ![]() |

I bought a Monster HDMI Cable at Best Buy ($150). The guy showed me a few cables. he said and showed me how some don't do 1080p. Only one cable Monster makes does 1080p. My question is, is this true? Aren't all HDMI cables he same and can do 1080p?

Don't waste your money on a monster HDMI cable at 150 bucks. MAJOR rip off.
I am pumping a 1080p signal over a 35ft cable run with no issues. I paid 45 bucks for that 35ft cable via monoprice. Excellent quality cables and CHEAP. I just got in 4 HDMI cables for some stuff I will be adding. 2 6ft cables, 1 10ft cable and 1 3ft all for about 25 bucks with shipping. Quick shipping and the prices are EXCELLENT. |

OK...I just hooked up my BDP-S1 and its beautiful. Only watched 1 movie so far, Ultraviolet, which looked great. I know this was a digital to digital transfer, but its great. I also picked up Aeon Flux, but most of the reviews I've read (after I bought it) say that the HD DVD version was cleaner and sharper, so I'll exchange that when I pick up my HD-XA2 when that comes out. I'll keep updating on my Sony as soon as I watch more flicks.......

And don't buy into the mpeg2 inferior FUD from the reviewer, the AEONFLUX BD looks fab, as does the HDDVD. (I own the HDDVD, a friend the BD). Brian |
