ps3 vs standalone - Blu-ray Forum

Hey I was wondering, what has better picture quality (for movies): ps3 or standalone blu ray player.
No bashing here or creating an uproar but ive heard about how bad the 360s player is and im not saying the ps3 is but I would like to know if a standalone player is better for movies or if the ps3 will play them with completely equal quality. I dont have a bluray player yet and am starting to plan a purchase.
If a standalone player IS better, then by how so and how expensive do you have to go to get better picture?
Also, I believe I read on here that for outputing the sound of movies from the ps3 to a receiver you have to use PCM (?) which means the ps3 decodes it...does this affect the sound that much? I would be using it with an Onkyo 605 receiver...

The PQ is absolutely the same on stand alone or PS3. One advantage the PS3 has is that it does firmware updates on it's own. I know Cris suggest the PS3 to customers who are not computer savy for that reason alone.

I've heard the Panasonic 30 has slightly better PQ than the PS3 - but I've looked at my own over and over but I can't tell a difference...not too distinct. Might be visible on a larger TV, haven't tested that out on my new 42".

For BD playback they will be the same PQ. The diffrent players differ on HD audio & also the # of analogs out, but looks like your going to use HDMI? So that will not be a problem unless you want DTS-MA.

It uses the same lasers and focusing system as the stand alones so there should be no difference in picture quality.

PS3 is fantastic. Normally when I splurge and buy new entertainment equipment, I end up regretting the decision in a week or so, as prices inevitably drop or something better is released. I bought my PS3 back in March this year and it is quite easily the best purchase I've ever made. It's PQ is as good as anything else I've ever seen, but it's overall versatility and functionality make it a gem of a home entertainment item. Get one - you won't be disappointed!

Since you have a 1.3 receiver the Panasonic is the best player for you. Since the PS3 will not bitstream audio for you and the 30 will.

For now... but for how much longer? Hmmmmm...............

My opinion is that with the PS3, you get almost the same thing (shy of the HD audio FOR NOW) for around the same price with the amazing convenience of wireless internet built-in for upgrades (no messing with burning CDs or trying to find your USB stick and making sure that your file structure on the USB stick is set up properly... yada yada yada) and several other useful devices all in one bundle for an insanely good price if you were to buy all features of the PS3 in seperate units.

Personally, I'm happy to live without HD Audio for a little while longer in trade for the amazing abilities of my PS3.

Now it should be able to do decoding of DTS HD MA at some point but when is the question. There is not a standalone on the market that can do it. And following the current trend of giving a standalone a few months to sell. We are looking at March maybe later until that happens.

And if you look at the persons post buring a CD will not be a big deal to them. So that aruement is a loss for this person.

You might be willing to trade audio for awhile but they donot have to and should not have to. Which is why I said go with the 30.

For your setup, the Panasonic 30 model is superior. It's very fast loading for a SAL and is 1.1 compliant, bitstreams all of the HBR audio, etc.

If I didn't already have a PS3 in my Home Theater, I would have bought one in a heartbeat.

Even if you are not a gamer, these two games alone will cause PS3 to be in the news constantly! Be part of history...

Wi-Fi...online access...wireless gamepad is your remote control...hard drive for music and photo files etc...

Cool factor X 100!

Please go with PS3...

Does the Panny upscale as well as the PS3?

I am blown away by the upscaling of the PS3 (and I had an upscaling player before this -- no contest). It makes conventional DVDs look about twice as good -- only about 20% less detailed than a BD on my 9 foot screen.

If you are planning on playing any conventional DVDs I'd make sure any standalone player is at least as good as upscaling as the PS3 is (perhaps they all are -- I have no basis for comparison).

He should be aware that he will lose some feature capabilities using bitstreaming. May not matter to him but he should be aware of it. I'll be looking at a standalone to compliment the PS3 down the road - simply because I don't want to pay the upgrade price to get HDMI on my Anthem and will therefore need one for the HD Audio.

Let's just get all the facts on the table for the guy so he can make the best decision.

The Panasonic will be a better player for you most likely... and you get the immediate benefit of DTS HD MA which you won't with the PS3.

On the other hand you're obviously a gamer, so there is that to consider. If you aren't going to play games on the PS3, then get the Panasonic instead.

Thank you all very much for the information!!! To answer some of the questions, if I did get a ps3 I would want to play the games. However if lossless audio (bitstreaming) is alot better than PCM outputted by the ps3 I may want to get a standalone player instead.

I never get this quite right because these features aren't that important to me..but with PIP the secondary audio is only possible if the actual player does the decoding of all your audio and not your receiver (ie. bitstream)..I think there was another issue as well but someone else can chime in with the full details if necessary.

May not matter to you but then again it may which is why I mentioned it.

PS3 hands down. It is future proof for a long time. PCM audio is the way to go. DTS-MA will probably be soon incorporated into PS3 through another firmware update. Plus you getting the best gaming system most game makers haven't tapped into yet, so in the future you might want to play a game that's gonna be talked about in these forums and you won't be disappointed.
