Saw PH last nite.
No question about it...one of the best looking BDs out there.

Would have been a better movie if some of the romantic melodrama was cut back.
However, still gets a "thumbs up" from me.

Default The movie is a joke

Nothing worse than a movie that's supposed to depict a defining moment in history that completely ignores all the facts. Nothing in the piece of junk has anything to do with the actual events of Dec 7th or the raid on Tokyo. Even the real ships that were used in parts of the attack are 1960s vintage.

Haven't seen this thread in 3 years.

Seriously, what did you expect? It's. Michael. Bay.

Default Problems with a vintage Pearl Harbor BD

I have some issues with my Pearl Harbor BD. It no longer plays on my PS3. It freezes at the "Your film is about to start" screen. On my BDP S570 it skips frames and at the end of the first chapter I get continuous noise from all speakers. I asked Buena Vista support about it and they sent me a shipping label for a free return and evaluation.

I suspect the problem has to do with some firmware update to my players.
The BD was purchased in 2006 and I had no difficulties playing it until 2011.

I don't know if anyone is interested, but I will post the resolution when/if I get it.

The movie could have been better, but I think the action scenes give my 7.1 system a good workout with the LPCM 5.1 sound.

I received the 60th anniversary commemorative edition as a replacement for the defective disc I sent to Buena Vista. It plays perfectly on both my PS3 and BDP S570. I still think the uncompressed LPCM 5.1 48 Hz 24 bit audio is reference material. Thank you Buena Vista.

Agreed with the OP. I'm still waiting for Michael Bay to release the Director's Cut so that it might change people's minds about the film. Say what you want about Pearl Harbor, but IMO it was still a million times better than Titanic.

I doubt you have a problem. I hear firmware updates intentionally do this to movies on Blu-ray that suck. I think its labeled, the "movies that suck" update, causing them not to play. So they have really done you a favor.

Well, it's certainly funnier. That's the only reason I own it, it's hilarious.

Agreed. It's like an episode of Jerry Springer's Love Triangles Revealed.

On this forum, the BD is owned by 2,038 members. Also the blu-ray.com reviewer rated PQ 5 and AQ 5. If you aren't impressed by the LPCM 5.1 audio perhaps you need to start upgrading your HT.

It was nominated for 4 Academy Awards and won the Oscar for Sound Editing. Despite receiving negative reviews from critics, Pearl Harbor earned $449,220,945 at the world wide box office

http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=pearlharbor.htm

Just a note: The audio default is DD 5.1 (lossy). You have to select the LPCM uncompressed for lossless audio.

Is there really a director's cut of this film? I had no idea there was. Do you know what the differences are between the theatrical and director's cut?

Shakespeare in Love was nominated for several Oscars in 1999 and won Best Picture and is by far one of the most boring films I have ever seen. My point is that even though Pearl Harbor had 4 nominations it still stinks. I have a history degree and have studied WWII for years and the film is an insult to American history. The one forgiving grace is that the Linear PCM track is reference material, which is the only reason I own it, well that and I only paid $10 for it.

History degree? So you're unemployed, right?

I kid, I kid. In any case, I agree. I HATE THIS FILM WITH A PASSION! But I keep it around because that AQ/PQ during the battle scenes is incredible.

Plus, look at those P40s! They can dogfight like X-Wings! It's a miracle how they turn so well...

Ha! Luckily I am about through with my Masters degree in business and I'll probably get my doctorate in history after that.

Yeah, the hour of the film that includes the battle scenes is great, but the rest of it is pure rubbish.

This movie is just not ever going to be on my blu ray shelf. Besides the war scenes, it's just horrible.

I wouldn't even have the film's imdb info in my browser history, let alone actually own the disc. The film is excrement.

It isn't a documentary; just as Titanic and Saving Private Ryan were not documentaries. If you want historical accuracy The History Channel and National Geographic are good sources for videos about Pearl Harbor.

For historical accuracy of the war in the Pacific, the recent HBO series, The Pacific, is excellent on BD. I recently read A Helmet for my Pillow by Bob Leckie and am currently reading With The Old Breed by E.B. Sledge; two of the protagonists in the series. Those two books were some of the source documents used for the HBO series.

Not to belabor the point, but, the movie was successful despite the criticism.

Honestly, though, when watching Pearl Harbor I tend to skip the chapters with little or no action.

A little known historical tidbit about the film: Some of the scenes in it were the last to use Technicolor.
