I've seen arguments against going purple (format neutral) because that sends mixed messages to studios on what format is truly most popular.
Are there enough purples to truly influence sales ratios? I.e. how much higher would 2:1 BDA advantage be if purples didn't exist? Is there any data out there that says what percentage of Blu-ray player owners (including PS3) also own a HD_DVD player? |

We've been talking about this elsewhere.
Although I only have a gut feeling on this, I sense a lot of initial HD DVD supporters have gone purple. And to those people, if the posts here sometimes offend, I apologize, we really do appreciate all Blu support. If the movement has occured much the other way, it's much more under the radar. The big issue is whether there is a lot of fence sitters waiting for a resolution of the war, or merely for a good value in a dual-format player. Gary |

I think the purples are in the minority actually. Its a hard figure to get how many there actually are because purchasers of each format don't register anywhere that they own the other as well.
Its just my opinion, just being purple isn't so bad. HD-DVD players are cheaper and it does extend the range of titles somewhat. I know BD is better but the difference to me is negligible because I don't use BD to its utmost best. I have never even heard DTS-MA or DTS lossless audio. It must be a myth ![]() |

One reason (there are a few) I'm not purple is I don't want two sets of disc's one for this player one for that player. At this point in time even the biggest HD DVD fanboy would have to acknowledge (if they are being honest) that Blu has the upper hand and at this point in time is going to be the likely victor.
Once you go to a big screen (100") my HDD equivilents (Warner & Paramount) look soft and a bit fuzzy compared to Fox, Disney and Sony for the equivilent age of the films N.B. yet to compare Blade Runner and HP as they are still in transit. If they are as a bad as the rest I will not be buying any more Warner until they start releasing movies that take full advantage of Blu-ray. |

I didn't go purple, because I wanted to research both formats and decide on what I considered the best one. Turns out, it is blu-ray.
The purple crowd loves to tote themselves as movie lovers, but real movie buffs want this format war bullshit to end. Supporting both ends it how? If anything, going purple guarantees you have bought at least one format destined to die out. |

It's a disagreement over what is the best course for ensuring the success of high-def media. I am curious, what would purple people think about Warner going exclusive either way? Is it OK for one format to die, or do you want two? Gary |

I think most would be cool if one died off. Buying into two formats is like hedging a bet. Even in the beginning you know that one is going to eventually die off. You're probably mentally prepared for that outcome well before it actually occurs. |

I own both, and i think the arguement that " if you dont pick one or the other you are not a movie fan" is just ridiculous. I am a movie fan which is why i own both. I want to be able to watch PoTC and Transformers, etc. I dont watn to sit back and have to wait for whatever movie to appear on my preffered format. I do prefer BD though, as the majority of my purchases are made there, and I buy HD-DVDs for the exclusives they get such as King Kong, Transformers, etc. I think the majority of people who pick one side over the other and then fight about it are not movie fans, but fanboys of that format.

it's exactly what MS is pulling for.... and no offense to the people in this thread...it's not like HD-DVD is a bunch of bums with nothing to watch on their format.... but they don't have enough titles that I want for me to go purple... but as I've said....if things swing into HD-DVD's favor at CES....I will even go purple because there would clearly be no end in sight... that would mean Warner going red exclusively.... if Warner went red and Uni went purple....then we still lose because we had Warner this whole time without getting Batman begins, V for Vendetta and The Matrix Trilogy... |

I did the research and concluded I preferred to be blu. To come to a Y in the road and just sit there only means you're going to get run over. To me, the smart money was on blu so I took that route.
80+ movies later I'm still very happy with my choice. Would I go purple? From the purely financial point of view, no. I am limited in hdmi inputs on the Onkyo receiver to three and they are all taken up, an hdmi switcher would have to be purchased and it would cost prohibitive to begin a chameleon process at this point. From a desire point of view, no. Of the very few movies that are on the red side that I would like to own, I will be satisfied with the up-conversion of the PS3 from the SD discs. |

what if the purple person is from the red side? is that one purple to many? that dosent make any sense at all.
I was red first because it launched first. thats it. You guys always assume a purple guy is some fence sitter, nay a blu ray defector. you have to allow some form of migration from the red side, therefore they already own red hardware and software, picking up the odd red exclusive title is hardly a sin when in going BLU they have already started adding to the blu totals. As any red exclusive comes to BLU i will replace with the Blu version. but lets be clear, red to blu also becomes purple, yet thats a good thing imho |
