Warner Bros Purple Rain (1984)

Purple Rain Blu-ray

Purple Rain Blu-ray Review

I have read some pretty brutal reviews for Purple Rain on Blu-ray and am considering getting it. Anyone here who owns it think its worth buying? Is the quality an improvement over DVD releases?

I was thinking about buying this movie. I'm going to have to look into it. I hope that it isn't as bad as you've heard.

I love the movie but the reviews I've seen have given me no incentive to upgrade from the SE DVD they put out a few years back.

Hey,

I like the movie. I own the DVD and rented the Blu Ray and the Blu Ray is simply the best you will ever see of this film unless it goes back to theaters. I think it's the best you will see of it on Home Video.

It's not the PQ of Crank for example or Cars but there was nothing particularly bad about it as far as I remember. It's just an older film so somewhat soft but colors still benefit from the HD presentation.

I was very tempted to order this from the current or recent BOGO but just at the moment I gots no fun money.

I recommend it. I really love that movie so I'll own it on Blu Ray someday.

It's not distractingly bad PQ in my view it's just not reference PQ either. If it's going to be your only Blu Ray then of course you ought to get something that will flex the Blu Ray muscle.

-Brian

I just recently received this. Like a previous post said it's probably the best PQ you will find the movie in. I've watched a few scenes (mostly music performances) and it's not an eye sore. If youre a fan of the movie then I would recommend it.

I must say I love this movie, it's one of me and my best friends top movies and a must see when he comes down from airforce. It's an aquired taste so if you like Prince than this is a must buy, made my cold as ice friend almost shed a tear at the end, lol.

The PQ is good for the movie. It's really is a improvement over the DVD. I agree with the other posters that this is the best the movie has ever looked. It's not reference, but it's still good. The TrueHD audiotrack is great as well.

I have the movie on Blu. Yes, I think it worth picking up. The acting is horrible (Prince) and cast, but I bought it really for the music.

Don't forget that this was a low-budget film, so production values were poor. My copy will be here in a few days.

Should be easy to get too. The local BB has the original 10 copies still sitting in one slot.

Jerome: No, it's okay.

Jerome: Far as I'm concerned.
Morris: Damn it, say the password!
Jerome: What.
Morris: Say the password, ***** breath!

I picked it up months ago and thought it looked pretty good for an older movie.

I like the fact that you have everything on one disc,as there are some excellent extras for Purple Rain.PQ and AQ are also an upgrade from the SD,although not night and day.

picked this up on the buy one get one free offer. loved the music in the movie, but didnt feel it was worth the full price. pq and aq are prob as good as it will get, tho neither are very good. i can't care less for the video, apolonia is the only thing worthy of good pq in the movie. aq was a bit disappointing as i felt the bass was very lacking.

I had never seen Purple Rain before, so I rented it on Blu-ray from Netflix. Most of the PQ is okay, but there were some obvious digital artifacts in some of the 'on stage' scenes - where the borders of the blue and purple lighting effects didn't look quite right, and a couple scenes where the contrast wasn't what it should - blacks looked more like grays.

Like I said, I never saw this movie on DVD, so I can't compare. It's the worst quality I've seen on Blu-ray, but then I just got my PS3 a couple months ago and haven't seen a lot of Blu-ray movies yet, especially those as old as Purple Rain.

If you like the movie and you do the BOGO and can get it for $10, I'd say absolutely, go for it. If you've already got it on DVD, you can probably sell that thing for a couple bucks and then it's even cheaper, right?
