It's the format itself in the first place.

What if people don't buy a PS3 for Blu-ray in the first place? It doesn't make any difference for BD sales, because BD sales are topping HD DVDs and that, the sales, is the most important in a format war.
Content will be the main factor along with pricing. At this point BD is growing in content and BD pricing is coming down. Pricing may not be coming down fast enough for many potential buyers though. One thing people should be considering while they question sales numbers for BD is the fact that manufacturing BD takes longer than HD dvd. I Gurantee that it will be almost impossible to get your hands on Casino Royale and The Departed a week after release.

Where the hell is Crouching Tiger and Marie Antoinette?!?!!

I estimate most PS3 owners will be like me and buy 5-15 blu-ray movies before the year is out and even moreso if it (bluray) had a deeper back catalog. I just can't see why PS3 owners would buy SD only, even if they have 480i televisions.

Takes time.
Exactly... it takes time. A survey of ps3 owners showed something like 70-80% plan on buying blu-ray discs. A million installed PS3s? It didn't get to that until the end of december, early january. Literally it has only been a few weeks... and in that short time, BD total disc sales jumped up and have equalled HD-DUD, which has been on the market longer.

By March you will see a major distance between BD and HD-DUD. That's only a few more weeks (pretty quick in my book)... so be patient!

I can - it's WAY cheaper!

Anyway - looking at this thread, I think that adding everyone's numbers up (OK - I am a 10 movie/4 game ratio) we've got the 400,000+ already from the Blu-Ray forum... :-)

If those stats continue, then by end of march we are predicting 4,500,000 BluRay players by the end of March.
(Sony's prediction of 6million PS3s worldwide * .75 BluRay buyer rate). This should dwarf the # of standalone players on either format. Who cares if they are stand alone as long as the sales # show.

It's simple: Many people aren't interested in simply replacing their DVD with a BD. That's an expected and acceptable reaction.

It will be the hot new releases that matter. And Universal has NOTHING to offer there. Almost literally nothing.

$5-8 less for new SD titles is not imo way cheaper, and for somebody to have the money to spend $600 on a PS3 to complain about $5-8 more expensive BD movies is just.. just another reason why price shouldnt be a problem

Worst case scenarios of people not buying BD yet because of SD televesions and price is no concern, because both of those problems will remedy themselves in the coming months (2 years at most) as they upgrade to HD sets and blu-ray prices drop.

That isn't too bad, there was 438K sales of Blu Ray vs 1 million PS3 sales in the U.S.

You cannot assume that every PS3 owner has a 1080P T.V., nor that they'll be willing to shell out the extra cash for Blu Ray over DVD.

I think that once there are more titles on BD, people will buy more. I bought a PS3 a few weeks ago and only have 5 movies so far because I don't want things like Into the Blue. I also don't have money to replace all my old movies. And at least 2 of the movies I wanted to get on BD were delayed. But I've seen sales pick up some where I work.

I own more movies than games. 2 to 1... (only have 4 movies, 2 games)

Tax checks havent even hit yet. Mine is deposited the 16th. I will be buying about a dozen movies that day.

Give it time. In my area, PS3 has only begun to become available, and they usually sell out in 24-48 hours timefram when stock does show.

PS3 will drive blu ray for alot of college kids like myself. Dont have much money right now, the PS3 does games and hi def movies, so it is a deal thats too good to pass up.

Give it time. Sony's PS2 launch sucked even worse with all the defects...

Blu ray has already overcome HD DVD - and it will win.

I will replace my dvd collection to blu-ray as titles become available in bd format! Count me in! Blu-ray will stay and certainly will not be behind the other hd format!

.
Last comment here - just about society in general. Americans (myself included) will plunk down $500 for great technology, but we will drive the extra mile or two to save 3 cents/gallon of gas...about 50 cents of the total purchase. Don't think that movies aren't treated the same way. $12.99 vs $20.99 has some sort of psychological aura to it that will make it seem 'way cheaper.' So yes - price is a problem for the non-blu-ray forum types.

That's exactly what I've been doing. Phasing out my DVD collection as BD replacements come in.

Here's 3 reasons for the low numbers:

1. As of now, Sony has only SOLD 1,387,000 PS3s so far (http://nexgenwars.com) though the other 600K units are probably out there somewhere...(store shelves?)

2. A lot of people bought PS3s just to sell them on eBay.

3. A lot of people don't have HDTVs yet (mrb713 & Paladin)

So, Bluray is doing well in this light. Now that the eBayers are weeded out, Bluray should only do better & better!
