Default HD DVD Studios & Buyers - Should The BDA Offer A Settlement Package?

The Warner move has sent shockwaves through the high def industry; Blu now dominates again

Bring yourself down to earth though, we have not yet won. Paramount still exclusively supports HD DVD. Universal still excluisvely supports HD DVD. Dreamworks still excluisvely supports HD DVD. The independent reminent still support HD DVD to a greater or less degree. The HD DVD camp can't win but they can sink us in a format war that drags on and on and on.

So what can be done? First and foremost we need to mend relations amongst the consumers. We need to get early adopters and high def adopters behind blu. So what could be offered? I propose:-
- Warner to offer a HD DVD > Blu-ray exchange program. Send in the DUD, get a BD.
- BDA to offer a US$10-US$20 per disc 'buy up' for all 'other studio' HD DVD sent into them.
I think these two measures would end it.

Yet we also need to get Universal and Paramount onboard. Without them Blu will never become defacto. Therefore they should be offered a conversion package: US$500million each and a share of future licencing to convert their production facilities. A high price but an essential one if we are to beat DVD methinks.

What does everyone thing? One format to rule them all? Let's do it!

Put down the crack pipe.

Seriously, F 'em all I say. It's over for them. They are negotiating from a position of extreme weakness. Make them hurt.

BDA only needs one more studio, I'd say grab Univesal (fire Graffeo), then punish Toshiba and Paramount for their stupidity. Don't Mess!

No, Blu need all studios. Otherwise there will always be salesmen/gossip that says it's not a fully supported format. We need all studios onboard now. The desire to "punish" Toshiba/Paramount/Universal could kill us; we mustn't let that happen!

Let HD DVD die a fast death or a slow one...either way the end result is the same. They have lost and one way or another it will all end for them.

The Digital Bits is hinting that some sort of consumer hd dvd exchange program may be in the works already. I wouldn't be surprised if that actually came about some time toward the end of the year. As far as studio wooing, I'm sure there all sorts of deals already on the table. Paramount and Universal will undoubtedly milk this for all it's worth. Remember they stand to lose a lot if they end up sitting on a large inventory of HD DVD's that they can't sell because they've declared themselves blu. As hard as it is (I'm something of a trekky and I love the Jurassic Park movies) we all just need to be patient. The end is inevitable and will happen this year.

Or they could continue to follow Microsoft and follow the digital download path leaving our Blu plane to crash just a few miles from the burning HD DVD wreck. It may already be to late for us, but if this 'war drags on for much longer it only weakens us further. We need settlement now.

No damn it, how many times are we going to have this conversation.
Buyer beware.
They made their choice when all the needed information was out there.
It would be a slap in the face of all of the people who supported blu from day one.

I would rather be slapped in the face than be knocked out by a heavy punch when my format died because it lacked incomplete support and had a whole host of vocal 'haters' online.

Caveat emptor, buyer beware! When you enter a format war you have to acknowledge the possibility your format won't win, it is the price you pay if you can not take the loss then stay out. Why should someone provide incentives for people who made bad decisions in something that deals with wants not needs. Natural disaster, wrong place wrong time kinds of deals then yes help out. Something like this where they made a decision but chose poorly does not necessitate forms of aid, one should not reward bad decisions. Now if the companies wanted to give the money to a worthwhile charity then they should but incentives like this are not what is needed.

Sorry folks but Oblivion is right.

All these F'M, let em rot sour apples stuff is a tad immature.

Think about it, BD still has to fight off the 800 pound gorilla which is S DVD. I would much rather try to lure HDDVD folks to BD than simply have a "screw off" attitude. We need these consumers to go BD period. Conversion is the key. It has worked for the Church all these centuries.

I'm fine with them offering something to consumers, but I don't feel offering millions to Universal or Paramount/Dreamworks is worth it. All we need is customers on our side. If we had 90% or more of HD customers, it wouldn't matter how many studios they had as those studios would eventually come to the format where they can actually sell product.

Not a chance they will have made they're blu announcement by April's Fools Day (better known as Paramounts and Universal Fools Day)

there is no point in offering money to the enemy. they soon decide to join BDA without money involved after they lost money from HD DVD. Money just make it go faster, but even without money, I have no doubt this will be happening

let those poor saps stare at their hd-dvd players and movies and let them think about how much money they wasted and that's the bottom line.
