Answer me this? Everytime I go to the HD section at Best Buy to look at the Blu-Ray Movies a Sales Man or/Women (I've had Both do this) makes it a point to come to me like "I don't know anything" and Brag on the opposite Format HD DVD? They tell me that they believe the opposite format will win this war and I am investing my money in a failure. I believe they are just trying to sell enough HD DVD's to double up on their sales when it's junk. I Make it a point now (because I buy a few Blu-rays every week) to ask how they feel about the two formats and I'll be.... @#$% if they always say HD DVD will be the next Format. I think they have sales meetings to make them say it.

I used to work at Best Buy and while I do not know about their sales pitches about the HD formats I do know this. Best Buy dictates to their employees what they should tell their customers, if a particular item is not selling well they will push that item by saying its clearly a better product than something it is not. I remember several times listening to other employees flat out lie to customers just to get the sale. Ever heard of getting a virus through AIM? I haven't but thats what we were told to tell people. Put it this way don't trust the BB employees, I make my own decisions.

I can't complain too much about BB (in Canada anyways).
I was contemplating buying a PS3 remote control and they sales guy said I should just use the controller. We went of further to discuss that console accessories don't go down in price either (just take a look at the PS2 controllers). I'm glad i didn't spend $40 CAD + 14% tax on the remote. |

I had a BB sales guy tell me "this model of DVD player is really top notch. Don't let the high rate of return fool you." He told me this right after I told him that the preceding model failed on me 5 weeks after I bought it and the replacement unit failed 6 weeks after that.
What is it with BB sales people that they do such silly things? |

Don't let the high rate of return fool you? Oh man that's classic shit.
Anybody who still buys something after that sales pitch should be made to wear a donkey's head for 24 hours for being such an ass. Thanks for the laugh guys - keep the stories coming. |

1. It saves your controller battery life cause the six axis doesn't have to be on for 2 hours doing nothing. 2. DVD bd navigation is a quick and easy. All function like the subtitles can quickly be turned on at the push of a button. |

The problem I had with the controller is that since the R2 and L2 buttons are "triggers", when I set it down, it would start fast-forwarding. The remote in the US is around $25 (30ish CAD) so I'd check around and see if you can find a better price. But if you are content with the controller, disregard.

I had quite the opposite experience at the BB in my area (Bay Area). Every person I talked to told me that they sell Blu-ray 5 to 1 and they all believed the Blu-ray will win the war.
This whole war thing is really stupid. Why don't they just merge like XM and Sirius and stop all this silliness. |

Heh. Ok the axis is 'easy' to use but it absolutely sucks as a blu-ray\dvd controller, the blu-ray remote is SO much easier. Let's say for arguments sake you're watching a movie and you need to go to the bathroom. You then Turn on your sixaxis (because you say you turn it off) wait 2 seconds for it to register with your ps3 hit the x button to pause, come back hit x button to play, then hold the ps button for 2 seconds to bring up the sub screen to turn off the sixaxis which actually interrupts the visuals of your movie because the sub screen is not at all transparent ,all the while I'm hitting pause and play on the blu-ray remote with little effort and virtually NO visual interuption. Just think that's just one little function not to mention all the other crap you have to go through with the six axis for certain things. Let's try this one. You're watching a regular dvd movie and in the middle of it you feel like going to the special features so what do you do with the six axis? You hit the ps button to turn on the six axis wait 2 seconds for it to register with the ps3, hit triangle to bring up the floating controller menu, select menu with the d pad, hit x to access the dvd menu, select your special feature then hold 2 seconds on your ps button to turn it off (and visually interupt what your watching cause of the black sub screen to turn off the controller)... All the while I just have to push the 'top menu' button on the blu-ray remote. But hey your ps3 as Blu-ray player worth +500$ is not worth the proper blu-ray remote, all the power to using your six axis. ![]() Oh yeah, the blu-ray remote also has the 4 colored buttons (red, green, blue, yellow) which are going to be programmable for interaction for the blu-ray movies in the future. If you look hard enough you can get it for less the 40$ |

BLU-RAY and HD-DVD camp are made up of several hundreds of different companies and they are not service providers so they can not merge. The merging of two service providers like Direct TV or Dish Network (merger never approved), or Nextel and Sprint are examples of mergers. Now the closes thing to a merger for the HDTV optical formats would be for several companies to make universal players for both BLU-RAY and HD-DVD. Then again if Universal Studios would just release in BLU-RAY there would be absolute no good reason for a universal player that played both BLU-RAY and HD-DVD. Possible if Universal studios still after 2-3 years is still being convinced by people in the HD-DVD camp like Microsoft to stay with HD-DVD then we might see several universal players on the market so that people can watch movies in HDTV in both formats. Maybe Universal will get a special discount from Microsoft for downloadable HDTV movie service in the future and will stay excusive to HD-DVD. Then again since it looks like BLU-RAY is a hit and is about to go mainstream the average consumer might stick with BLU-RAY and purchase or rent standard 480P Universal titles on DVD. So far only LG is interested in universal players. There needs to be more manufactories willing to make universal players for both formats to coexist. I would strongly be surprised if HD-DVD is still around in 2 or 3 years unless several universal players hit the market. If the HD-DVD camp loses Universal Studios as an exclusive studio then the HD-DVD format will most likely die within a year. |

If you look at the VHS and BETA war, there were many retail stores and movie rental companies carrying both formats. The Sony BETA was a better quality product but was marketed wrong. It took to many years before Sony licensed other companies to make BETA machines. Sony has learned by its past mistakes it made on BETA and is marketing the BLU-RAY product in a very excellent manner. This time around the Toshiba HD-DVD is the losing format.
If you go back to the VHS and BETA days way before Sony decided to stop making BETA machines the retail stores and rental stores due to declining revenue from BETA decided to stop carrying BETA products. I think the same thing will happen with HD-DVD. In the future once stores like Circuit City and Best Buy see the declining sales of HD-DVD software that they will make a wise decision to pull HD-DVD products from their shelves. The only thing that would stop this from happening is if by a miracle several companies release a universal player then both formats would coexist. I keep repeating my self over several posts, but the fact is Universal Studios has so much power right now. If they would release movies in BLU-RAY then the format war would be over. No need to own a universal player. This entire war is so very stupid. HD-DVD only has a 3 month head start over BLU-RAY. It’s not like HD-DVD has been around for a year or two before BLU-RAY which would have made a more interesting format war. Here is another way of looking at the format war. Even if in a fantasy world where all studios support BLU-RAY and HD-DVD and there is equal number of movies in both formats, I still think BLU-RAY would still win. Why in the world would everyone want to purchase a Toshiba HD-DVD player? People like choices of brands like BLU-RAY currently has. There is a Sony, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, and Panasonic BLU-RAY player to choose from. Toshiba must be in fantasy land if they think everyone is going to purchase a Toshiba brand HD-DVD player. None of the Toshiba players currently support 1080P/24. BLU-RAY camp has two players that output 1080P/24. In the future I think the Toshiba HD-DVD players will not be carried in retail stores and will be sold over the Internet until one day Toshiba stops production of HD-DVD and makes BLU-RAY players. |

The good thing is that if or when the HD-DVD format dies Best Buy will be able to sale most of the HD-DVD dual disc movies to people that have a standard DVD player. Also existing Toshiba HD-DVD owners might decide to purchase a few more titles before the format dies. Those future HD-DVD owners can still play standard DVD’s and CD’s. If the HD-DVD format really dies there will be a flood of HD-DVD players on EBAY with software.

Also since you can navigate the XMB with the BD remote I can go to the PS store or hop on the net real quick before playing the movie all while the sixaxis is still fully charged and plugged in. |
