ok if anyone wants to tell me in the most noobish way possible how to make it so everything plays in its best potential format, pcm, dolby digital whatever....
not sure if this is done through my blu or my tv?

also what kind of wire is required for a powered sub? isnt there like one wire i can get that just plugs in rather then running the speaker wire.

PCM, Dolby TrueHD, DTS HD/MA

Just one audio cable for a powered sub with maybe a splitter at the sub end.

Thanks to JasonR I believe Dolby TrueHD is possible with the S300 so if thats a selectable option then:

Dolby TrueHD: Linear PCM

Sorry, I just thought he asked what all HD formats there were. Should have read a little better.

TrueHD is not selectable.

Since DolbyHD isn't selectable, wouldn't you just leave that at downmix PCM? Otherwise it is probably 5.1 DD? I could be wrong?

couldnt answer that question as I dont have the s300. But it sounds logical.

(then hit the display button on the bd remote to see what codec and bitrate is shown, to verify)

ok guys before you cause me to come back with 30 more questions about bitrates bitstreaming etc ..... one important one.

could i have caused that 1st hdmi port to not function in some way, or is that a manufacturer defect? just wanna know if ill run into any trouble returning this receiver monday.

i think all i have been playing so far is the reg dolby digital 5.1, but i have been floored, coming off of nothing but tv sound for the last year, amazing.

If the HDMI port is faulty you should definitely return it. Could it be your fault? probably not unless you stuck a fork in it first.

A faulty hdmi input is not very common, but it does happen. So return if possible.

Supported Audio Formats (pg.35 user manual)

• 2-channel linear PCM (32–192 kHz, 16/20/24 bit)
Multichannel linear PCM (up to 7.1 ch, 32–192 kHz, 16/20/24 bit)
Bitstream (DSD, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS, DTS-HD High Resolution Audio, DTSHD
Master Audio
)

You have yet to be "floored"

Paidgeek confirmed that the s300 is capable of internal TrueHD decoding, IIRC. Which was not readily believed, because the common assumption is that it isn't capable. If I were you, I might head over to Paidgeek's insider thread and check it out. I've gotta run, but I'll come back and post the page #s for you.

Return the unit, that ain't right. Did you try setting Dolby Digital to downmix PCM to see if you got TrueHD?

as long as it shows the bitrate you will know what youre hearing.

Lossless audio will be higher than 1.5Mbps (usually 3Mbps and higher)

from what i have read and the way i understand this, my player doesnt do truehd master audio or BITSTREAMING? so no bitstreaming means no pcm correct? i think the best i can get with the s300 is dolby digital 5.1
