Not when there is no proper authority to settle the matter straight once and for all --> when someone credible attempts to, there's always people seemingly as credible that come around and argue the contrary whenever a position on this particular matter is taken. At some point, you just have to know when to give up and enjoy your movies (in DTS-HD MA and LPCM

Why is always important. To do otherwise is to dispose of rationality and delve into emotions.

First, a uncompressed DTS-MA file and a PCM file will be identical. Now where I think the difference may happen, is that if your receiver or pre-pro is doing the uncompressing, it is using CPU cycles to do this. This takes away from the receiver's CPU power to perform post-processing (i.e. matrix 5.1 to 7.1, etc) since PCM would not have to deal with that...PCM would free up resources on the receiver to deal with post-processing (i.e. better matrixing). Of course, if your player deals with the uncompressing, the above does not apply.... |

- What is better? Have the PS3 decode the soundtrack internally or have the PS3 pass the bitstream and have the receiver decode the soundtrack? My early guess is depends on the quality of the DAC's found in the receiver? |

One final note: why doesnt the PS3 just sends the bitstream of both DD HD MA and DTS HD MA?
(sorry if i asked a dumb question...) |

The answer is: The current PS3 hardware is not capable of bitstreaming either Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD MA and no amount of firmware will EVER make it able to do so. Maybe a future edition of the PS3 will come with a revised/different HDMI chipset... but the current PS3's are incapable of it. |

I guess the big one is: why on hell didnt Sony enable a bitstream only option capable of passing DTS and DD HD formats? Damn! |

It's a future software change (firmware update).

1. the cell processor of ps3 is power enough 2. you can save bunch of money w/o having to buy latest receivers that can decode dolby trueHD and DTS-HD MA. |

I have another problem.
Since I heard PS3 is already support Dolby TrueHD. However, for my experience, for those titles which support both PCM and Dolby TrueHD, there would be a lot of difference to my ears between these 2 sound track. PCM seems much better than Dolby TrueHD. My PS3 was set to HDMI output for linear PCM. In theory, if ps3 support dolby truehd, there should no difference between PCM and trueHD, any settings I overlooked? |

PCM is probably getting output about 4dB louder than Dolby TrueHD. Since loudness is generally perceived as clarity, that's probably it.
