Unhappy SXRD is Feeling Sick (Orange)

Since I purchased my 50" Sony SXRD Rear Projection HDTV, it has been running like a champ. I calibrated using CNet's numbers, and I have always been satisfied with its picture. About a month or so ago, I noticed that faces had a weird orange tint. Figuring that it must have been my color settings, I decided to wait until my copy of DVE arrived so I could adjust it with the color filters.

So I adjusted it, and the orange tint got even more promenint. It makes films unwatchable. Watching Dewey Cox today, people's faces looked like they had a horrible fake tan. So I adjusted the colors to make them look ok, and then other people who look like oranges. Couldn't get a good setting no matter what I did.

So I called Best Buy (yay extended warranty!) and they are coming out next weekend.

Anyone else notice this? Or did my TV get the Hiva?

What model of the XBR do you have? I know the XBR1 had some tint problems.

It's just the movie you're watching.

LOL! Where's Ice2Dragon? That definitely deserves to win the internet for today.

Excellent comedic timing, Sylin.

optical block.....make sure you inspect the TV well after the replacement is put in. Also check out avsforum.com for information regarding your set and exactly what to look for.

Optical block, huh? Damn, I guess that's why they warranteed that part for 2 years instead of just one year for everything else. I hope they don't force me to go through Sony to take care of it.

If you are past the one year mark then they (BB) will most likely take care of it for you. If you are within the first year of your TV then they will most likely ask you to deal with Sony. Just say no and remind them that you bought the warranty from them. I had an XBR1 and an A2020 the first one had green blob. The A2020 had a green tint and after they replaced the optical block I had green and purple corners. They eventually let me return the TV but I had to go through the BBB and Consumer Affairs to put pressure on CC. Just be persistent or they will ignore you. Those after market warranties are like pulling teeth

I bought a 55" SXRD about 2 years ago and I love it still. While there have been some upgrades since, I think the picture's great. Blacks aren't as deep as I'd like and there's some very minor motion blur in crazy fast sequences, but overall I'm more than happy. Thanks for the heads up though.

By the way what is CNet?

Woohoo!

@Josh: I have the same TV as you (50" SXRD)... had it about 9 months... no problems. Please post an update once it's serviced!

I actually didn't like David Katzmeier's settings. To each his own, I guess, but it made the picture washed out, IMHO. When I toyed with it myself, I got what I felt were better results. (Of course, I now have DVE on Blu-ray, but I haven't used it yet.)

Here is what I am using after DVE HD:

Mode: Custom
Advanced iris: Min (assuming you are in a darkened room)
Picture: 88
Brightness: 52
Color: 55
Hue: 0
Color temp: Warm2
Sharpness: 50
Noise reduction: Off

The rest matching CNet. I like the Warm2 setting as it gives everything a nice life-like feel, though going neutral won't hurt. Just a personal preference.

Basically, what I am seeing is orange shadows on faces. Any place there is a shadow, it shows up orange instead of a darker shade. If I dial down the color to counteract that, and shift R/G towards the red to bring color back, then the blacks go completely orange. It was absolutely horrible last night while watching Dewey Cox. I had to stop the film and schedule an appointment before I could even get half way through the film.

I'd be interested to see what the replacement is. I've had the KDS-50A2000 (first version) now for about a year and a half. No issues. I did purchase the extended warranty, believe it or not, so I'm interested to see if they replace your TV.
