Figuring that it must have been my color settings, I decided to wait until my copy of DVE arrived so I could adjust it with the color filters.

So I adjusted it, and the orange tint got even more promenint. It makes films unwatchable. Watching Dewey Cox today, people's faces looked like they had a horrible fake tan. So I adjusted the colors to make them look ok, and then other people who look like oranges. Couldn't get a good setting no matter what I did.

So I called Best Buy (yay extended warranty!) and they are coming out next weekend.

Anyone else notice this? Or did my TV get the Hiva?
Got a link to those settings on CNET, I have the same TV and can't get the settings quite right.

I actually didn't like David Katzmeier's settings. To each his own, I guess, but it made the picture washed out, IMHO. When I toyed with it myself, I got what I felt were better results. (Of course, I now have DVE on Blu-ray, but I haven't used it yet.)

Here's the link to cNet's setup:

Here is what I am using after DVE HD:

Mode: Custom
Advanced iris: Min (assuming you are in a darkened room)
Picture: 88
Brightness: 52
Color: 55
Hue: 0
Color temp: Warm2
Sharpness: 50
Noise reduction: Off

The rest matching CNet. I like the Warm2 setting as it gives everything a nice life-like feel, though going neutral won't hurt. Just a personal preference.

Basically, what I am seeing is orange shadows on faces. Any place there is a shadow, it shows up orange instead of a darker shade. If I dial down the color to counteract that, and shift R/G towards the red to bring color back, then the blacks go completely orange. It was absolutely horrible last night while watching Dewey Cox. I had to stop the film and schedule an appointment before I could even get half way through the film.

I'd be interested to see what the replacement is. I've had the KDS-50A2000 (first version) now for about a year and a half. No issues. I did purchase the extended warranty, believe it or not, so I'm interested to see if they replace your TV.

The Best Buy tech (who surprisingly has been working as an electronics tech since 1971) saw the same thing I did but would/could not diagnosis it as an optical unit failure. He said that because the color board wasn't throwing any errors, the unit was operating in its manufacturer suggested limits.

This, of course, was not the answer I wanted to hear. But, he did help me out and gave me some suggestions on how fix the problem. Sure, its going to take me a few months to solve, but he led me to believe that it would eventually happen. Read into that what you will.

Josh,

Let me know what model you have. Maybe I can assist after your orange problem is solved.

I would not buy that excuse. I had a problem on my 60 SXRD XBR2 where there were these blue squiggly lines forming in dark areas, transitions between faces and hair lines, cheek bones etc. They replaced the light engine which did not solve the issue, then they replaced the B2 Board that I believe had the graphics relay/processor and HDMI ports and the problem was fixed.

Sounds like you might have a similar problem as the unit is displaying the color properly but the transmission of said color information is messed up, it is interpreting flesh tones as orange. It does not matter if it is operating within specs, if there is a problem they can not diagnose it does not mean a problem does not exists. Apparently the problem is not with the optical unit as the tech noted it was not throwing any errors. Call them back and demand they send out a new tech who will fix the problem as they have a duty to repair the unit, as it is not operating normally.

Let me know what happens.
