The Best Buy tech (who surprisingly has been working as an electronics tech since 1971) saw the same thing I did but would/could not diagnosis it as an optical unit failure. He said that because the color board wasn't throwing any errors, the unit was operating in its manufacturer suggested limits.

This, of course, was not the answer I wanted to hear. But, he did help me out and gave me some suggestions on how fix the problem. Sure, its going to take me a few months to solve, but he led me to believe that it would eventually happen. Read into that what you will.
