Duel

The man is vastly vastly vastly overrated. He is nowhere near one of the best.

I'm trying to start anything but how can you say he's not one of the best?? His list of movies is insane....Everything he touches seems to turn to gold, and not just his newers stuff but even his early works....I'm not a huge Spielberg fan but I have to appreciate what he has done for the Industry...

Who do you consider to be one of the best?

Jurassic Park is my favorite film of all time. It holds a very special place in my heart. Truly one of the only theater going experiences I remember from my childhood. But other favorites from him include: E.T., Indy movies, Jaws, The Lost World and War of the Worlds. I am sure there are more as well.

In this order...

1.) Jaws-scared the crap out of me as a kid! Left an indellible impression! My love for scary films was spawned from this and Halloween.

2.) Raiders of the Lost Ark - Tapped into every childhood imagination I had! Only Star Wars captured my attention more as a child.

3.) Saving Private Ryan - I've never fought in a war but I imagine that the opening Normandy battle in this film is about as close as I am ever going to come to knowing what it must've been like to be there without actually being there!

4.) Jurassic Park - To this day, I think the CGI dinosaurs in this 15 year old film are more realistic than most of the CGI I'm seeing in current movies!

5.) The Goonies - What DIDN'T this movie have that appealed to the childhood imagination! I think we all fantasized about finding buried treasure in our local towns! I thought the pipe organ made entirely out of skeletal remains was the coolest thing I'd ever seen!!

6.) E.T. - Again, back in the 80's Spielberg had his hand on the pulse of kid's imaginations and in the case of this movie, their heartstrings!

Plus an honorable mention has to go to Poltergeist. Although he technically did not direct this, I still consider this a "Spielberg" film. He did produce it and his directoral "fingerprints" are all over it!

I love the list. I would move The Goonies to number 1. This movie will never EVER get old. My favorite movie of all time.

JAWS is my favorite movie of all time. I am a big Spielberg Fan.

Jurassic Park 1 and 2
Indiana Jones - All Four
ET
The Terminal
Duel
War of the Worlds - not bad.

I enjoy what Speilberg can do. He can take an object and make you see it in a different perspective.

It's hard to pick just one but I guess I'll go with Jurassic Park. Loved dinosaurs as a kid and never outgrew that. It was pretty amazing at the time.

Others:
  • Close Encounters
  • Saving Private Ryan (I was numb after seeing it for the first time, couldn't even figure out if I liked the movie or not).
  • E.T. (one of the first movies I can remember that I went to see multiple times. It was also a movie that everyone was talking about and in general, there was a lot of excitement surrounding it. It was one of my favorites for quite a while)

It's kind of hard to leave off Poltergeist since horror is one of my favorite genres and The Color Purple as well. I really didn't want to see The Color Purple but was talked into it by the girl I was dating at the time. I ended up really liking it though.

Heh, didn't do too poorly. I'm sure most would love to have a $300 million flop.

From wiki:
Quote:
Despite these mixed reviews, the film was very financially successful and managed to gross $119,654,900 in the U.S.A. alone. (subtotal)[4] Worldwide its figure stood at $300,854,823. At the end of the year, the film stood as the 4th highest grossing movie of 1991.

The only one I recognize from your list is John Carpenter and his name holds a negative connotation for me as I saw his work in Vampires. Though don't get me wrong I enjoyed a few of his movies, but that one was just a huge stain over his career IMO.

I come from a strong military background so Saving Private Ryan is my favorite Spielberg film. I don't have a favorite film of all time because I'll grow tired of anything if I have too much of it.

Jaws, Jurassic Park, Raiders of the Lost Ark. Those are the top three of SS films for me.

I love The Goonies, but must point out that Spielberg did not direct that movie - he's the producer. Dick Donner directed The Goonies. (If we're counting movies that Spielberg produced, we might as well throw Transformers on the list.)

Thanks, been waiting for someone to point that out. I believe someone mentioned Back to the Future earlier...that's another Richard Donner, not Spielberg...he produced.

I must admit that that is an interesting list. I'm aware of quite a few of these guys, and I'm sure you realize that most of these directors did not distribute films in the U.S., and so their work in not well known.

But when you make a list this big, it draws attention to the guys you didn't mention. It is interesting that your small list of Americans doesn't include notables such as Hitchcock, Scorsese, Kubrick, Ford, Coppola, Welles, etc, and omitted some international notables like Kurosawa, Bergman, Fellini, Eisenstein, Renoir...

But, to each his own.
