Well as an update, I just ordered the Pioneer Elite BDP-05FD. So, once that unit is shipping, I will be one more adopter of the Blu format.

Like I said, some of us were just waiting for the final specs and units that decoded all audio formats (other than a PS3) to be available. Then again, the PS3 only just recently started to decode DTS-MA.

I think those of us that were waiting to add a Blu player to our preexisting rooms now have the oportunity to get stand alone player that allow us full access to the audio codex that older recievers could not decode natively.

you should be supporting the best tech out there. That's blu-ray for now, but only with respect to image quality. It's inferior to streaming and even to DVDs with respect to accessibility and convenience... I'll likely be saying goodbye to Blu.
Well at least tron3 is spreading the word, and that's what we need, more people realizing the astounding PQ and AQ benefits offered by BD players when of course hooked up to capable receivers and HDTVs.

You can have Itunes with its 720P resolution and inferior AQ, and I'll take 1080P and lossless audio Blu ray any day!

I still have not made my purchase, and the first people gave the reasons why. I just can't afford it right now, and still can't afford a nice HDTV. I'm saving up my Best buy gift cards and just waiting on the prices to drop on the TV I want and the Blu-Ray player.

I'm waiting to get either the 80GB PS3 MGS4 bundle this month or the Sony BDP-S350 next month. Perhaps both?

Personally, if I want a standalone player, I'd wait for one that's got built-in Ethernet and USB 2.0 port so I can have automatic firmware updates and Profile 2.x soon. I know the PS3 already does or has this but I'm talking about standalone players which is why I'm at least waiting for the S350. As for the PS3, I'm just waiting for the bundle above b/c it's gonna be a good deal w/ a DualShock 3 controller instead of the SIXAXIS one and MGS4 might be fun to play, plus 80GB with more USB 2.0 ports and PS2 backward compatibility seems to be more of a must-have than the 40GB model.

The economy! Gas prices out the wazoo and everything from stamps to produce is up. Not to menntion the average consumer doesn't understand HD. However, they will come February 09.

Economy, gas, food, heating, etc. Workload slowing, companies losing money, hours being cut. It's bad and getting worse, but Obama will fix it.

Price.

And the public in general is retarded. Walk into any store and within 10 minutes you can overhear a conversation or a question that will make you roll your eyes.

Hmmm, I cant think of a better way to put this, so...

DVD was a huge leap from VHS (and betamax for people that had it) Because of two things. Quality and the actual device.

Quality was a HUGE jump because not only was the picture/sound better, but DVD's would not wear out. Suddenly you could pause a movie, go get dinner and come back 100,000 times and your movie would never wear out.

The DVD was a huge jump because it did not need to be rewound, was small enough to fit hundreds in a small area, etc. It was also a novelty. VHS was a tech that had been used for LONG LONG time. Magnetic tape was old school. Laser and discs were only a decade or two old. A laser disc that was smaller than a record was amazing.

Blu-ray has ONLY quality going for it. Everything else has already been used to sell DVD.

Remember, Beta-max was a MUCH better product than VHS, but they were both magnetic tape. Same product to consumers, so they pick the one that can recond longer.

For the majority of consumers, at least right now, Blu-ray is JUST a much more expensive DVD.

As for Blu-ray being too expensive, VHS copies of Star Wars were over $80 back then! Blu-ray, like VHS and DVD will slowly find it's price point at around $15-$20 a pop for new titles (1995 dollars).

Why is it always so important what other people are buying? I mean what does it matter to me if my neighbour is using a VHS-, DVD- or blu-rayplayer? As long as I can see great movies like POTC, Spiderman, Casino Royale, Narnia, I am Legend, Ratatouille, and Harry Potter on blu-ray, I don't care much what other people are looking at. Most of the people here in Europe have never heard about blu-ray and actually it is fine to me that I have something that they don't.

I think most people care because they don't want to see their format of choice, the one they see as superior, to die out due to low public demand. The more people buy, the more interest generated by studios. The more interest, the better quality/quantity of features. Everyone wins if everyone is interested.

Initial cost of ownership too high and improvements over std. dvd only marginal for the casual user.

Exactly. The more BD units out there sold the more movies that will get made. Star wars for instance. The more players that are out there then they will think nothing of making alot of movies that they think will move alot of units. Its all about money. If every Blu ray owner bought a movie it still would not be enough for the directors or studios to think about making some titles.
Have you seen those new Blu ray booklets? They really explain Hdtv,Blu ray and Upconverting. I have been grabbing them from the stores and leaving them all over the place. The more that know the better. I think everyone at my work is tired about hearing about Blu. But when they go to buy at least they will be well informed.

In terms of quality it was superior, especially by the time they invented ED (extended definition) BETA in 1988. It had DVD-quality video capabilities (700x480).

Seriously, seriously? Come on, this thread is over 2 years old and has been dead for awhile. Why?

Some mod should just put this thread back into its exile.
