Memoirs of a Geisha (2005)

As per usual, the book was far superior to the movie. I enjoyed the movie but, it wasn't something I would want to see again. Can't get as in depth and have as good an understanding as from the book. My GF didn't like it at all as she too had read the book and thought they butchered the movie but again, you watch movies to enjoy not to disect. You could easily say the same of Jurassic Park which was a billion times better as a book than a movie but, for pure entertainment purposes, was amazing to see on the big screen.

I liked it, it had a beautiful story to tell, also it gives a little insite into Japanese culture.

The visuals are pretty, but really when I think of this film, one name comes to mind... John Williams. His score was so great for this movie that it's worth seeing it just for that... Unfortunately, the movie itself isn't that great. You can tell the quality story is there, but it's presentation just seems off which makes it boring.

It's first & foremost the story of a woman, but I don't know that necessarily makes it a chick flick. I rather enjoyed it myself. My wife read the book, which is how we came to get the DVD; I'm the one who decided to double-dip for the BD. I think it's a really good character-driven story, well-told, and---though my gear ain't reference-quality---pretty sumptuous in presentation; Sayuri's debut as a geisha is one of my favorite scenes on BD in my collection.

I own it and am proud of it. Having visited Japan on four occasions and witnessing, firsthand, the Geisha experience, I easily related to the film. It provided interesting insight and knowledge as to the background activity of the Geisha culture.

this movie sucks. i can't stand the way they spoke in this movie. the movie could have worked better if they spoke in japanese.

I think if this had been Japanese language with subtitles it would have been much better... if it had been made that is. I think English was the key that secured funding.

would've had to change most of the female cast in that case as the 3 main female roles all played by chinese actresses.

i think they should of made it in both languages so it feels more like the book the narration should be in english but the language spoken by the characters is japanese

I like the movie very much, it is photographed beautifully, has a superb soundtrack and good actors. It is a rather quiet film, so if you are looking for suspense and action, it may not be the right film. But it gives insight into the Japanese culture aroung World War II and especially the Geisha phenomenon.

I just watched it a couple of days ago for the first time. I thought that it was a very well made piece of entertainment. In order to enjoy/respect it though, one must have an understanding that it is a very character driven film. The story is there only to support the characters, not the other way around like in most films.
