Really hope this happens, but I'm not holding my breath. Not something I watch a whole lot anyway, would just be nice to have in HD.

Those are the only 2 horrible changes that make me not want to watch "RETURN OF THE JEDI" ever again.
Now comes a new releases. Will those changes still remain? Of course they will. The only thing that is different will be the stupid cases.
Ain't that the truth.
Still have the DVD's, and I'd rather have those, with all the problems they may have, than the blu ray release and those asinine changes. I caught a glimpse of it and the 'noooooooo' is as grating as a fork scraped on a chalkboard. What a disgrace.

Yep. I remember some of the Lucas apologists actually defending them. "See, Lucas released the unaltered originals on DVD and they are still complaining!"

Maybe if I watched them on my 5" wide screen on my cell phone they would be tolerable?

To this day, the only copy of the original Star Wars trilogy I have ever owned is the gold case VHS collection from 1997, which I first watched as a 5-year-old kid. With no blu-ray release in sight other than the 2011 versions, which I can't abide, it looks like I won't be upgrading for some time.

You're already watching a highly-compromised version (as it's both the 1997 Special Edition and pan-and-scan) as it is...

Wouldn't technically, the CW mini-series be owned by Warner? Being it was a Cartoon Network co-production.

Yeah, this. I can get through the blu-ray's of ANH and ESB without wanting to gouge my eyes out, but Jedi... I just can't do it. That's why I always go Despecialized.

Ja, I'll watch the BDs of Star Wars and Empire but the latest version of Jedi is the ultimate exercise in pointlessness so I'm quite happy going back to the 2004 DVD of Jedi. I would go back to the original but I don't like to mix the original and post-97 versions when on a trilogy rewatch, it's just too jarring.

I'm not saying they couldn't have been better but it was what 10 years ago when those came out? The vast majority of people still had tube tvs then and they looked looked on par with everything most people were currenty watching.

They do? I'll have to try that. I was thinking of re-watching the GOUT in the near future but the thought of watching them in non-anamorphic widescreen was putting me off.

My 2011 Panasonic has an excellent zoom for non-anamorphic DVDs. It's a manual setting on some players and automatic on others, like Sony decks, although the problem with the auto-zooming players is that the DVD needs to be flagged properly for it to work.

With 2 kids, I doubt I'll ever actually get to do a trilogy rewatch in one day like I used to. So our viewings are usually sporadic and rarely in order. But we rarely put the blu-ray discs in anyway (unless one of my kids wants to watch a prequel, which does happen, from time to time... Dear, oh dear.). Otherwise it's Despecialized all of the time.

It doesn't have to be all watched on one day, I don't have kids and even I don't do that sort of thing any more. But even across several evenings it's still weird mixing up the originals and the SE's.

They didn't.

They were released 10 years ago, but they were essentially the 1993 Laserdisc releases stored on a DVD. Even upon release they were over a decade out-of-date - and even back then it showed. They looked pretty decent in 1993, bad in 2004, and they look even worse now. People weren't watching 4X3 letterboxed Laserdiscs in 2004 - that was nearly the beginning of the BD era.

It's a built in zoom feature, virtually the same thing the vast majority of HDTV's can also do. Even if your player doesn't do it, your TV will. 4X3 letterboxed DVD's, by design, are not the same as anamorphic releases.

Got back home and popped in the ANH limited edition, fully zoomed in so the widescreen image fills the entire 21:9 monitor frame (minus a sliver of black bar flanking the image). As long as I sit at a proper distance, it doesn't look abysmal. Not very good, but passable. Very happy to finally have these DVDs.

Why the heck would you watch it like that?

You lose Greedo's translation in Star Wars and Jabba's in Jedi when you zoom the non-anamorphic DVDs?

Yeah, it's not the optimal way to watch. I just wanted to see how the disc would look.

No, it's not. You don't have to press the zoom button.
