Actually I'm wondering if they cut it because it makes Threepio indirectly responsible for causing someone harm - granted they're stormtroopers but I can't recall him ever doing something like that in the rest of the films.

Doesn't he do that when tricking the troopers guarding the shield generator, though? "I say, over there!" leading to them getting ambushed in VI?

If they kept the scene in, it would have come full circle later on when he gets blown away, (off-screen) presumably by a stormtrooper.

It was Artoo's idea technically.

The other night, I opened up the in-set toolkit for an upscale viewing of the '06 UOT DVD release on a 55 inch LG LED. Special Seasoning consisted of scaling courtesy of a Panasonic BDT-220, slightly goosed color, and a few experiments with noise reduction/detail enhancement, contrast and brightness optimization. The end result was actually pretty serviceable. Long shots suffer the most, given the modest amount of available detail. But the gist and essential Force of of the OT comes through. If I have to, I can live with it.

But bring on that restoration, eh Disney?

Were you able to adjust the subtitles so they appear on the image as opposed to the black area below the image?

I can do that if I scale with the TV (an LG model using "Cinema Zoom" mode). When zoomed to the full width, I can nudge the image up to expose the subtitle area. It's a faster process with the blu-ray player, which I sometimes prefer for convenience; as far as I know, it doesn't support re-positioning of captions.

Last year I tested my 2006 DVDs of the unaltered on my Panasonic plasma (had to do the zoom in), they looked serviceable for the most part and the soundtrack sounded quite good for what it was. Still sticking with the Harmys for now though.

Are the UK Complete Saga sets the same, content-wise as the US editions?

Yes. Given its pricing ($47.xx shipped as sold directly by Amazon UK), the 2015 UK re-release is currently the way to go when buying the Complete Saga set.

The only downside to importing from the UK (besides waiting a week or two for it to arrive) is the nanny-state BBFC ratings logos slathered all over the packaging.

Thanks. Even if ordered domestically, it seems the UK comes at significant savings.

Oh, that's interesting. I'm watching the start of Empire on TV here in da UK, on Sky 1 to be precise, and the Fox logo was nowhere to be seen, it started with the Lucasfilm logo + fanfare that was used on the DMA streaming version.

Looks like even if we do get the original cut of the OT, it will never be completely unaltered. I wish Disney would just keep the Fox logo and put their own before it.

I know to some people it may sound ridiculous to complain about a logo being altered, but filmmakers DO have the opening logos in mind when they're setting up the tone of their movie. That's why so many films, like Star Wars, have customized opening logos. They're not just trying to be cute.

No, I understand what you mean. The original Star Wars without the Fox fanfare is like The Wizard of Oz without the MGM logo.

If we ever get the original cuts of the OT then I genuinely think that the logos will be there for posterity's sake, but for the special editions it's clear that Disney will do away with the Fox logos when handling the distribution themselves.

What surprised me is that I thought Fox still handled the TV stuff as part of their extant deal, i.e. they're the ones that the TV channels would pay to get the broadcast rights from, but it seems that Sky's previous deal with Fox has elapsed and now they've gone straight to Disney/LFL to get them.

That's what struck me too. Either that or Disney purchased the broadcast rights from Fox in some undisclosed deal.

Btw... is it reading too much into things that the current saga set just dropped to $59 at Walmart and now at Amazon just 2.5 weeks before this year's big Star Wars Celebration? I mean, I suppose the lower price could be a marketing tie-in to Rogue One's release. But I guess what I'm really hoping for is that retailers are starting to clear out old inventory because a new release is about to be announced. Maybe? Please? Pretty please?

Ah, it appears that this happened in 2015, they did indeed go to Disney for everything except Ep IV. Note the pointed comment from the Fox rep: "We are thrilled to be part of this remarkable opportunity which will give consumers access to the original Star Wars".

Well, I guess it makes sense. Disney strips the logos off their own material after all. RKO, Silver Screen Partners IV...
