The new shade of green of the matrix looks more like phosphor green of old PCs that the Wachowskis used as an inspiration. It's cooler cyan shade, rather than warm green.

I never had anything against BD color grading, but now, comparing it with the new colors...

It was AWFUL.

I hope Reloaded and Revolutions will get the same treatment.

Well I believe the sequels were color-graded that way in the first place, and then the Wachowskis went back and regraded the first film based on those for that last DVD/Blu-Ray remaster.

Thematically I think the first film works better with the new 4K version, even when taken with the sequels. The Matrix is more of a mystery in the first film, with Neo learning about it for the first time, so the color-grading is more subtle and even inconsistent-- something is off about it, but its not instantly as obvious. In the sequels, like Neo, we the audience know and fully perceive the Matrix for what it is, hence the more direct and obvious green filtering everywhere when they enter it.

I love your explanation.

BUT even with the timing being basically the same, with wide color gamut I think we can count on more subtlety and better skin tones.

I used to think that as well but apparently, the sequels were both finished photochemically so that would mean the digital releases also went the "revisionism" way.

Your not the only one. They went way too far in some of those scenes replacing the green with blue. Sure, the new version looks more balanced and natural, but the Matrix isnt natural. The pervasive green was appropriate.

As long as the UHD releases of the sequels are consistent with the color timing choices of the first films UHD release I will be happy.

I'm kinda bummed to be honest. We finally get a solid release, a version that seems to respect the original look of the film.
But we also get people complaining and complaining. Often times just for the sake of it. And here I am... ...complaining

People would complain even if they got a chance to travel back in time and see how it looked on the big screen. You can't please everybody and you definitely can't please people who can't be pleased because of their constant need to complain about everything.

This was always my favourite film, i just always wondered how it would have been if they had the Prodigy - Mindfields in the massive shooting scene, because the song they do use for that scene just turns me off somehow

The green really bothered me on the BD. It was one of those things that just took me out of the movie. I'm still a BD pleb so I'll either have to buy this 4K release or maybe some 4K owners will be selling their discs on ebay.

Like on the one with Trinity pointing the gun it actually looks like they might have applied additional softening, glow and chromatic aberration.

My biggest issue though is that a lot of the blue/cyan tones were clearly not in the original film and have been digitally coaxed and goaded into place and I'm afraid there's going to be some artifacts and color noise as a result.

The previously mentioned shot shows clear separation/banding in the colors with the gradation on the latex going from dark to a reddish band to a cyan band to bright, typical when you try to selectively pull parts of the image in different directions. Same with her fingers going from pink to cyan. It just doesn't look natural/filmic, more like someone trying to apply an extreme, awesome, cool grade to their poor DSLR footage.

On the third shot with Trinity and Cypher the wall almost looks colorized with grain just about to break apart. Same with the cyan-tinted top part of the lobby shootout shot, as well as the smoke in the last one.

On the sixth shot with Trinity and the policeman the grain is in parts completely broken due to the colorization, very noticeable in the blob next to her ear and the white of her eye.

Hoping the HDR might alleviate some of this, we'll see.
Blotchy dupey grain, Pyoko's nemesis!! As long as the UHD's compression doesn't shit the bed then that grain will do me fine.

In Reloaded, during The Architect scene when Trinity is brought up in the conversation, the screens behind show

without the green.

Maybe that's what we'll be getting.

Can't wait for this, it's always been one of my favourite films. Pre-ordered both this and SPR too (which is set to arrive on 6th June...)

Looking forward to watching the lobby scene in 4K/HDR
