Right, exactly. And I always check to make sure it's not defaulting to a more modern track.

Its origin and purpose... still a total mystery.

The people who want to listen to the remix have a right to be annoyed. They should email Warner if they care that much and if there's enough of them something might happen. I'm simply responding to those who insist everyone cares. Nope! I'll never use that track, so why would I care? This isn't that complicated to understand.

You guys seem to want me to email Warner and send my disc off "on principle" for an error that doesn't effect me at all and that's not gonna happen, sorry. Life's too short and stressful enough as it is.

Now, can we talk about those previews they try to force us to watch, where the Menu / Top / Get-me-the-hell-out-of-here button doesn't work (sometimes even the next-chapter is disabled)?

Yeah, I know about the secret keystrokes that supposedly take you to the top menu, but they're device dependent and have never worked for me.

I haven't seen a disc do that since the DVD days.

You mean the forced preview thing? I've got it on several blu discs. It's guess it might not be a thing as much anymore, but we all have to put up with the discs we already have, and I still see it on the occasional rental.

I'll bet there was an edit point on the remix audio track between the title sequence and the remainder of the film. If somebody accidently hit a button and threw the track out of sync, it would only effect the audio up to the edit point.

Of course, I'm just speculating.

To be honest I don't even remember any DVDs doing it. Closest is WWE discs making the "don't try this at home" unskippable.

Always possible I've just forgotten though.

Good point. It's an easy enough solution to just opt for the original mix. If every mix was not in sync, then that would be a problem - maybe big enough for a recall, who knows.

I guess with marquee movies like 2001 there's an expectation that everything should be high-quality and perfect, and minor flaws or errors get magnified a hundredfold. I wonder how common things like this (sync errors) are on other releases.

You guys have had it easy, we've had years of forced previews on our discs in the UK. I think it was Optimum or Momentum that made us suffer through Snickers commercials ...

A couple of German BDs I have have force trailers too.

So you guys aren't finding that there is more surround usage in the new mix than the 1968 version ?

Do we have a spreadsheet here at BR.com that lists all of the releases with forced previews, that you can't escape out of, and forced "introductions" that can't be exited out of ??

Or that awful forced "Piracy Video" with it's horrendous soundtrack.

There's a separate issue here I think. I've spotted some quite strong cyan/blue noise in the new BD, yes, like on the shuttle as it approaches the station in one of the wider shots. I don't think that it should be there as it looks way more like a colour grading issue rather than something inherent to whatever aspect of the original imagery. The UHD is indeed much better in that respect though, the fizzing cyan noise is far less obvious.

Thanks, Geoff.

There's a lengthy discussion over at hometheaterforum about what might've gone wrong here concerning elements, dupes, composites...but I think you're probably right. During grading, in striving to achieve the look of the original release prints, they might have inadvertently hit critical mass on a blue channel, causing it to bleed into whites, highlights, etc. The press release suggests Vitali OK'd the UHD and blu-ray masters, and it's a bummer this didn't catch his eye as it doesn't seem like it'd be too difficult to roll back (if this is actually the issue). A couple of titles I have that look pretty sickly with excessive color benefit from simply reducing overall saturation, but with the 2001 blu-ray, things border on monochromatic before the highlight issue is addressed in affected shots, so it's not a proportionate imbalance.

Please link me to this: What I've seen is a lot of talk but no real information. When I asked I only got it's not my job.
