I think tale based on religious writings... It clearly tells you because if you notice the drawing of Ezekiel's Wheel... and not just that, the character's have biblical names, such as Caleb and John... and the "rapture" is so much like what happens in the end of the movie, but of course, you can't actually take out a true biblical movie now with Hollywood, so you have to put 50/50 for the viewers, making some think, that it is aliens... And also, almost at the end, when Nicholas Cage is driving to his parent's house, there is a van with a sign that says "Jesus is thee way, truth & life"....
