I don't know why Dune got such a bad rap, I thought it was pretty good. The only thing I can think of is people comparing it to the book - but almost ANY movie compared to the source novel isn't as good.

Taken on it's own I thought Lynch did a great job.
Absolutely. There were some bad parts (i.e. casting Sean Young and Kyle McLaughlin, come of the voiceover), but I really like this movie. It's a great story and IMO doesn't pale much when compared to the book. I will buy it at a reasonable price.

Yeah, I'll buy it when it is released. I likewise don't understand Lynch's avoidance of the film.

If you consider Moby Dick a light "bathroom reader", Dune should be no challenge!

The actual "Frank Herbert" Dune series is 6 novels:

Dune
Dune Messiah
Children of Dune
God Emperor of Dune
Heretics of Dune
Chapterhouse: Dune
Right, it's coming back to me

I think I started Chapterhouse but never finished it.

As one who usually despises remakes , this is one movie that cries out to be remade.
Quite "frankly Herbert" I have the extended Steel Book dvd and it's FX pale badly against much older films. Now before 99:9 % of you send a worm out to get me , consider what James Camron could do with it

Pierre Morel (District B13, Taken, the upcoming From Paris With Love) is directing the new adaptation or remake (whatever you wanna call it). I loved Taken but i really dont know what to expect from him with this kind of movie. definitely will be keeping an eye out for it.

What is in the extended version that is not in the original?

Glad to hear this is coming so soon AND is not a flipper! I really hope this includes both versions of the film.

Or Pierre Morel, for that matter:

I've never been a reader as I prefer to just watch movies. However, watching Dune (1984) on HD-DVD numerous times has really spiked interest. There is such a vast world of Dune to explore, and I'm very tempted to grab this novel.

Maybe I didn't look close enough. I saw it at Hastings, noticed it's small size, flipped through it, and it looked pretty doable. Maybe I didn't look close enough.

My 7th grade teacher tried to force me into reading the original Mary Shelly's Frankenstein. Somehow, I was able to get out of that because at 7th grade for me, that book was impossible to read. I bet even now, I would despise even looking at it.

He would make it visually astonishing. Unfortunately he would also knock the story down to a 3rd grade reading level. The special effects could be better in the 1984 version, but then movies aren't always about the visual bubble gum. It's possible someone could do a really good job with a remake, but no one comes to mind. District B13, Taken and From Paris with Love aren't exactly steeped in the sort of intelligence, subtlety and nuance appropriate for something like Dune.

Even then...too much visual bubble gum is disgusting to me, and I'm sure to most other enthusiasts. I like watching a movie that uses props, artwork, backgrounds, and hell, even green screens (like Dune, Total Recall, Blade Runner, Ghost in the Shell, Matrix) rather then a complete 100% talentless CGI marathon.

Sure, certain parts of Dune may look a tad bit cheap, but most of it looks extremely magical and impressive, and I can appreciate every bit of it's looks and effects. I'd much rather watch Paul and Patrick's knife fight with the shields than to watch any part in GI Joe. That type of stuff took real talent and work.

It's like Blade Runner. Lots of the background was pure artwork (actual paintings) with amazing set pieces. Nowadays, everything is computer generated, and just looks like absolute ass.

Gotta respect the old stuff. It simply looks better to me. Even Superman (1978) is still impressive as hell to me.

This movie was made for HD IMO. It's one of the reason why I spent $30 on my Xbox HD-DVD drive, and $3 on the HD-DVD. It looks absolutely phenomenal. Wait until you see the Guild Navigator by the emperor's throne...it's so damn impressive. Now we get the DTS-HD to boot...awesomeness awaits.

Twin Peaks box set that was remastered looks really great. I bought it and received in the mail a couple weeks ago from DVDEmpire.com. I think you will be impressed how good it looks. I have a PS3 slim.

Had to respond to a few posts regarding Dune. Anyway I'm excited about this one. I prefer the Lynch version over the Alan Smithee and Judas Booth version. I can't wait to pick this up on blu-ray.

I can usually make it through most 19th and early 20th century authors (most people find Bram Stoker's "Dracula" to be interesting); however, Shakespeare and Goethe are out of the question; I've tried and it just doesn't happen.
