And i'm getting so tired with arguments like "its a dance with wolves, pocahontas......rip off".
You can do this with a lot of especially big Blockbuster movies of the last 30 Years. And that are some very popular Blockbuster Movies now considered classics.

There are so many movies with such a simple storyline. Its HOW the story is told. And Cameron is a master of storytelling.

Anybody remember Aliens from him?
Aliens is absolutely equal in terms of writing. Very simple storyline and characters but cameron told it damn good and made a great action/sci-fi film. Today most people absolutely love Camerons Alien Sequel. And ironically a lot of the same people are criticize avatar for arguments that you can easily write in a aliens review too. Thats a bit crazy and i don't unterstand that.
Cameron was in the vast majority of his movies not the master of depth in terms of characters and story. But he can tell this tings very spectacular and great.

I hope my english wasn't too bad on this.
It's not so easy as a usually german speaking and writing guy.

I would give Avatar a 4.5 because i absolutely could connect to the characters (like in aliens too) and i was completely in the movie the whole time.
Cameron again did simple things so right that it is combined with the visuals utterly spectacular.
Amen!

I will COMPLETELY agree with you on the former two sentences (and on a case by case basis for the latter)...dozens of great movies have unoriginal premises yet the writers, directors, cast, etc have been able to transform it into something new and unique. However, I do not feel Avatar is one such movie as its characters (and dialogue) prevent it from transcending its recycled storyline. This could have been an absolutely stunning film had the script hit as high a wow factor as the technology that brought it to life. My opinion .

From what I saw (menu sequences) it has incredible depth. Obviously, not what we saw in 3D, but I really don't think you will be disappointed. I wish I could take the day off tomorrow.

I like the movie I give it a 7/10. But Cameron has gone soft. Aliens/T1/T2 are some of the greatest films made ever. But I tire now of his trying to please every single audience member. Creating again the simplistic "love from two worlds". Titanic it was rich and poor now its alien and human. Redlettermedia nailed it with his review of Avatar. It's good, but the characters I cared nothing about, too simplistic of black and white characters, no Grey in any of them. But still a fun adventure movie.

Though I won't lie its SFX and audio as well as the PQ and AQ is just outstanding beyond belief, just amazing.

I will have to show off my TV set up from now on with Avatar, it flexes Blu to the max.
Eh. In my opinion, it's far better than all three of those. T2 is probably closest.

I'd say... Avatar, Terminator 2, Abyss, Aliens, Terminator 1, True Lies, and Titanic.

Some may call me crazy, but I don't think the movie was intended to be dialogue driven. That is not to say dialogue is not important to the movie. I believe it is. I believe James counted on the visual aspect to draw in and sustain the underlying message of the movie. In that regard, he succeeded. As I said in a previous post, there may be more meat in a subsequent release.

Could not disagree more.

Just like you hate the mirror people make to Dances with Wolves. I tire of "Avatar fans" trying to rip on Aliens (or Cameron's older work) to at least make it an equal playing field.

The characters in Aliens were not black and white. Even Burke at times was human. And not just trying to kill. At times he was afraid, at times he was worried, additionally at the beginning he at least tried to pretend he was caring about the Colonists on LV-426.

Yet Parker in Avatar is just.....get rid of them. Its just trees kill kill kill.

Hudson had more character in him, he was a cocky guy that was really a coward who kind of became a hero at the end. Even though small they had character arcs. With Burke there was suspense because he was trying to be sneaky about being the sleazy bad guy, trying to bring the Aliens back without ICC Quarantine knowing about it.

Avatar has no gray at all in any of the characters none zip. Quarich is just like a Terminator but at least with Terminator what made that scary was that they were machines.

His earlier works had more fleshed characters, just like Coffee in The Abyss, it was not black and white about him or his situation.

All movies have 2D characters, but to me Avatar had all 2D characters. Aliens had some too, but not to the degree of Avatar.

And of course I'm not saying your not entitled to your opinion, but to me even just describing the characters there is way more there with Aliens than Avatar.

Not knocking your opinion, nor am I knocking the reviewer's. I don't agree obviously, but I'm not going to knock it either. Casey backed it up well. The movie's score doesn't matter to me though as I have my own feelings about the movie already.

I just have a real soft spot for The Abyss. Especially the extended cut.

I almost put it before T2. But the extended cut of T2 also manages to jump forward.

Any time something is immensely successful, people who would've just happily ignored it suddenly become much more negative. Same thing happened to the Dark Knight, typical blockbuster backlash... apparently I missed Heath Ledger giving a terrible performance in a worthless movie full of characters you don't care about. Really

I am content to ignore anyone's negative opinion and maintain that this is my favorite movie of 2009

I had no Problems with the dialogue. in comparison to let's say "Aliens" i see not that much difference to avatar. Aliens also had simple dialogues (especially the marines talk, one liners......), black/white writing in how the good and the bad is presented, a storyline that wasn't that new..... But its considered a classic today and loved by many people (including me btw.) That's because a Cameron can work absolutely great with such scripts. I could connect to some of the Aliens Characters like i can with especially Jake an Neytiri in Avatar. and i also liked sigourney weavers dr. augustine. and stephen lang was a great over the top villain.

Off course you don't have to agree with me in how i see the 2 movies. Its a free world.
But i'm so tired to reading things like "Oh this cameron movie sucks. He was so great in let's say aliens". That for me makes absolutely no sense at all.
