My old Sony reciever was like that when I tried playing certain BD's. I had to switch it from PCM to DD5.1 and it worked fine. I had just assumed it was becuase there was too much bandwidth, the toslink couldn't handle it.
Once I upgraded to my Onkyo, I haven't had a spit or sputter from the HDMI's.

Specifically, 300 comes to mind. The audio would cut in and out. If I switched it from PCM over to regular DD/DTS (can't remember which it had) it worked fine.
