And dammit if the scene with Luke igniting Anakin's Saber for the first time doesn't look downright beautiful.

Nice bright hot white core? Check. Nice bright blue edge to the blade? Double check.
Yeah, but that's not the scene people are concerned about.

It's the "green/white sabre" scene on the Millennium Falcon.

And is it just me, or did they add new shadows over Luke in that Rancor pit clip?

""just for fun here some inetrview from 2003! is it possible there are some hint from blueray? biggrin.gif

1. IAN MCDIARMID INTERVIEW

Q: Talking of tinkering, he’s gone back and done the Special Editions in the past. Has he ever talked to you about replacing Clive Revill’s performance with you?

A: I don’t know about Clive. I’m sure that’s occurred to somebody, but we’d have to talk about that. The other thing about George is it’s also important for him not to pretend that we’re remaking the others now. There would be little lines on something that’s been driving him mad for years, and he’d be able to change that. But I don’t think he’ll do any radical changes.

=> Ian McDiarmid kinda confirms it, but he also says there won't be radical changes. So, I don't think you have to worry.

2. GEORGE LUCAS 1997 SE INTERVIEW

Maltin: "Congratulations on the great success of the trilogy special editions at the worldwide box office and congratulations with the recent video release of the special editions. Before we begin to take on-line reader's questions, I would like to ask you one question about the trilogy: Is it now complete; exactly the way you want it?"

Lucas: "No, for the simple reason that a film is always an unfinished project. There is never enough time or money to make a film exactly the way you want it. There's always something that you can do to make it look better. We only had $ 10 million dollars to touch up A New Hope and there are still some things about it and the other two films that I would like to see changed and a couple of scenes that I may still want to add."

=> GL still isn't pleased with ANH, he still wants to add scenes. He "only" had $ 10 million for ANH. Years ago, GL just wanted a ANH SE. That's all. But Fox asked for a trilogy SE. So, GL had to divide the money over the 3 movies. ANH still needed the most altering, but looked improved enough to be released again.

3. JOHN WILLIAMS

“I am thrilled to have the chance to go back to something I composed in 1977 and be able to make the entire saga continuous theme-wise. Notably absent in the first movie is the Imperial March. Being able to insert that theme in the first movie will create a much stronger emotional flow throughout the Saga. After the release of Episode III George will enhance the original trilogy with additional scenes and special effects, adding my adjustments to the score this will seamlessly branch the entire Star Wars Saga into one massive romantic space opera. I think something of this magnitude has never been done before."

=> That's maybe the biggest proof we have. I don't think many people are against the adding of the Imperial March in ANH.

4. RICK MCCALLUM

...Now, while we can’t do anything about the three year delay, we can reveal why the finished products will certainly be worth the agonizing wait. As distressed as the rest of you by the absence of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of The Jedi in our DVD cupboard, Empire Online collared Producer Rick McCallum at the Attack of The Clones premiere to find out exactly what’s holding Lucas back.

”Three years is a long time, but that’s how long it takes,” he said of the delayed transition. But what, you may ask, is taking up the time exactly? Well, never one to do things half-heartedly, Lucas isn’t happy with a DVD of the original edits, nor, it would seem, of the enhanced Special Editions. Having previously confessed to shooting a number of additional scenes for the original trilogy while filming Episode II and with many more to be lensed during the third prequel’s production, George has made it his mission to complete the story once and for all. And so, we asked, will this spanking new footage make its debut on the DVD releases when they finally arrive? “Absolutely,” confided McCallum with a conspiratorial grin.

=> McCallum: reliable or not? We'll see within some years!""

I have no idea how reliable this is, as someone posted it online, but it sounds very plausible to me. I can't wait to see for myself.

I love that shot of the new Yoda, and I'd also love to hear "The Imperial March" in Episode IV...especially when Vader first enters Leia's ship. Just that 9-note motif, slowed down slightly, would be perfect in that moment.

Very nice shot indeed, but the only thing that bugs me is it still "clicks on" like a flashlight. I guess Lucas couldn't find a way of doing the usual "extended blade" method for that shot.

Unless this isn't footage from the Blu ray, but the unaltered '04 1080p digital file prior to the amendments made by ILM. Sigh.

ROTS-ROTS model.

Also, I read that this was a shot Rob Coleman did as a test, and it's not certain to be the final version they used in the actual movie.

We will see shortly.

This better NEVER be released anywhere!

THIS was the biggest mistake GL ever made IMO.

I find it really shameful that for many people, the only thing they can do to show their displeasure is hurl insults. A more constructive approach would definitely help matters in that regard.

There’s a story going round that George Lucas has, once again, been making digital nips and tucks to his Star Wars saga. It started with Bill Hunt at the brilliant Digital Bits, who attended a preview session with the discs and, in his most impressively comprehensive report, said:

Once again, George has apparently added a few new “surprises” into these films. I don’t know what they are and didn’t get to see any of them on Friday, but I was assured that there will be “new things to notice” when we watch the films. I think we can safely assume that one of them will be the new all-digital Yoda in Episode I.

Oh.

Okay.

But…

When I was at Big Screen a week and a half ago, I got to sit down with ILM’s John Goodson and Bill George. While it’s possible that they were mistaken and not properly briefed, both Goodson and George told me that, actually, no new material had created for the Blu-ray incarnations of the films.

I specifically asked precisely this, and they specifically told me that, no, George had not been making more changes of this fashion. I asked clearly, and they gave me a clear – and apparently definitive – answer.

Messrs. Goodman and George acknowledged the work done to the soundtrack, the reframing and the colour correction, and even the recompositing of effects, but according to these guys, the Blu-ray versions will simply be polished, perfected transfers of what wasn’t done quite right on the 2004 DVDs.
Just in case, however, I’ve dropped a line to a few appropriate people and I’ll see if we can’t get an official statement. Always good where possible.

I’ve got lots more on the Star Wars Blu-ray sets coming in the next couple of weeks, including lots from the conversations I had with Star Wars alums at Big Screen, and also my impressions of the Blu-ray sound and image. Spoiler: from what I’ve seen so far, they’ve really gotten it right.

Please note the time.

This is where this thread should officially be culled for it's own good. I have quite literally heard it all now.

And just to say I am SO excited to hear the orchestra at the very beginning of Ep4 in lossless audio, the yellow letters scrolling up the screen and then the initial sequence in 1080p.... Oh yeah...
