I'm sort of new to getting blu rays and I'm not very technical yet, but I have a never had problems like this with any other blu rays. Also I'm very dissapointed because they are my favourite movies and all.
Hmm, I hadn't heard about diagonal lines, but I know vertical lines on the outer edges of the image in the original trilogy were a big issue for a lot of people. It was mentioned many times much earlier in the thread. Many moons ago.

My TV must have cropped them out.

Ah yeah went through both specials discs and the spoofs, as well. Planning to watch again with the commentary.

Watched AOTC again today

Ok thanks, well at least I'm not the only one, I was watching ROTS last night and I actually noticed them more in that one!.....But sure I'll just have to learn to live with them so.

No, I don't think seeing lines in ROTS is normal. There was a green line on the right-hand side of the screen (very far right, almost completely invisible) for certain scenes in ANH. I haven't heard anything about any lines in ROTS.

I'm with you man. I've got severe white digital noise going on in my copy of ROTS! I thought my copy was bad and returned it, but the new one has the same problem in all the same scenes.
I can't believe people are saying ROTS is reference quality & it's being compared to Avatar in some circles The digital noise is so distracting I'd rather watch my DVD copy of ROTS instead! The other 5 films look great on my Sony though.

I had the same issue. I plan on watching on my laptop sometime just to see if it's as distracting there too. I expect it will be.

Aw well thats crap. Was hoping it was some other issue that could be fixed, seems like not many other people are having this problem!! Very dissapointed.

I think you should get your system calibrated. ROTS looks killer on my setup.

It's not Avatar clean, as it looks actually, dare I say, filmic.

It's not my setup. I have around 300 Blu-rays and they look great. The problem is with my ROTS disc. I've played it on 2 separate TVs' and 3 different players with the same results. I don't know, maybe I got 2 bad discs.

How can a digital image look filmic? If what you see looks like film, then you're seeing digital noise and that's a bad thing.

I didn't see any digital noise on my copy and it certainly looked like a digital movie to me, but that being said, I don't sit as close to the screen as I used to.

I'm now watching ROTJ and the white vertical lines all over this one, thinking it might be a faulty set, but I'm not sure. Well not so much of a fan of the Star Wars blus right now. Hoping I can get this sorted.

Martin Scorsese disagrees with you.

Quote:
Scorsese even compared HD to 35mm, noting that it brings a "film-grain quality" to movies and "allows the film to be seen as closely as possible to how it was intended to be."

If you read it in context, he's talking about Blu-ray - not HD cameras. I think (maybe I'm wrong) that we were talking about the qualities of HD digital cameras used in the film industry. Of course Blu-ray will look closer to 35MM film than DVD and include better grain structure. It can very often look at least comparable to film. I won't argue that. But your quote is taken out of context, at least for my purposes.

EDIT: The quoted post should have said "How can a film shot with digital cameras look filmic on your screen?"

Ah, my apologies. I thought you were referring to ROTJ (film transfered to a digital medium) but realize now you were referring to Avatar.
