Maybe that is what you need for some kind of balance? Maybe you are looking for bass that isn't there?

Yeah i know... I need to pick up a decent sub. If i can solve this overheating issue and get a nice subwoofer, this could be a pretty good set-up (besides the TV).

Unless you mean that maybe getting a sub will make me keep the volume lower? ...in which case, nope. My friend has a 606 and an insanely expensive sub-woofer (im not sure what it is), and i still keep it around 70 when i go there with the PS3.

Ill check out some subs i guess. See what i can get on my... very low budget.

I would still recommend calling Onkyo. I don't own an Onkyo brand receiver, but I have had mine to loud for comfort and it never overheated or shorted.

that's very odd that it would over heat that instantly. you can check the temp it's running at. hold the display button on the receiver and press the standby button a few times, then let go and press the tone button. my typically runs at just over 100 degrees. it used to get over 110 when i had my cable box on top of it.

Ive got no menu on the 605. Im not using the HDMI out on the receiver, so i cant see a menu on the TV screen. I dont have a HDMI port on my TV. (yeah... i know, i need a new TV too. Ill get one eventually. Just like the sub. ) so i was using a HDMI-DVI adapter, but somehow (dont ask how... cause i really have no idea), i managed to lose the cable.

Its alright though. Now that the fan is on it, it isnt getting hot at all. Wheras before, you couldnt even touch the thing if it had been on for more than a half an hour or so. It actually melted the bottom of my leather wallet which was sitting on top of it. I had to pull it off of the top... Fire hazard right there.
Yeah, as im typing this i cant help but think of how stupid i am to not realize that there is a problem with it.

Indeed they do, but the fans are very small and located on the bottom of the receiver. From what we all should have learned in 1st grade is that heat rises . Also when you have circuit boards and other accessories blocking the air flow another fan is beneficial to keep the unit cool.

I would be very curious to know what would happen if you hooked up a powered sub. It WOULD take quite a bit of strain off the receiver. I have the same model and I've used a powered sub since day 1 and mine has never even gotten hot to the touch.

Also as far as a fan goes, I use one of these to help cool my PS3. It's a 4" desk fan that sits at the back corner of my PS3 blowing hot air out the back of my enclosed TV stand.

I just plug it in and leave it running all the time. It's very quiet, but made a huge difference for my PS3. I can only hear it when everything is off. Picked it up at Target for less than $5.

Good luck getting it figured out.

Hope the Onkyo people will help you body... If it's running that hot and you've got good clearance on every side then I would think there is something wrong with it. Running a fan will help but why is it running that hot in the first place!

Am I the only one thinking that even with the protection, the heat will potentially damage the receiver and cause it to fail before it's normal expected life?

I willing to put money on the fact that you probably had some wires touching and when you cranked it, the resistance got too high and the reciever went into protection mode. I've done this myself on my old reciever. When you moved it to the window where the fan was, you moved the wires and since they were no longer touching, you can now crank your reciever. There is nothing wrong with your unit. Stories like these are how overheating rumors are started

I haven't read any of the other posts, but I noticed that you had it turned up to 70......wow..... I have the same exact receiver as you do and the most I've turned it up to is 68 and that was before I turned off DRC on TrueHD tracks. I recommend you check other volume settings first before thinking that you may have an issue as that is really too high and is the culprit for overheating.

I cannot see how turning it up to 70, 80 hell even 90 can present the amp with a problem. I have had my Onkyo anything up to 90 on some films (Predator DTS HD track is breathtaking to say the least).

Have you attempted to reset the amp to factory defaults!? Have you set it up properly with the MIC and what not?I do not mean to come across as a know it all but I just can't see how I have had mine up without any problems I mean worst ways I know Onkyo hand out a 3 year warranty so not too sad.

When I was using my Onkyo HT-SR505 receiver, 40 was quite loud. I couldn't image going too much over 50.

I have a big frontroom Besides I don't think I would have to turn up my Onkyo if I had more powerful speakers (only went with the KEF 1005's as they are small, smart and got rave reviews)

lol. Nope, no wires touching. And i didnt put the 605 in my window. I took a giant fan that normally sits in my window, and put it on top of the receiver.

a 3 year warranty!? Thank you for saying that! Ill look into it more. I thought it would be a one year warranty meaning id have to send it in within the next few months - which would mean i wouldn't be able to play LittleBigPlanet. ...which is a giant issue for me.
3 years... Nice.
