I've always liked this film, in fact it was the first Halloween film I ever saw long before I really knew who Michael Myers was. I agree with those people who say that this movie gets unfairly criticized because of its attachment to the Halloween franchise. I consider it to be far superior, as a film, to most of the subsequent Myers entries. That's not to say it doesn't have its flaws... the idea that those stupid masks would be the hottest thing going with the kids is kind of hilarious (like seeing kids dressed up in ballerina costumes with a pumpkin mask while trick-or-treating), but the supernatural elements along with the "Big Brother is watching you" aspect add to the suspense of the film.

SCREAM & CABIN IN THE WOODS

I know some fellow horror fans who genuinely detest these films, but I think they're a blast. Only filmmakers with an abiding love of horror could parody the tropes of the genre this cleverly, effectively and affectionately (not to mention just damn entertainingly). Balancing horror and humor is always a tough act, but these two pull it off nicely. In both cases the terrific and game ensemble casts look to be having a great time, and that enthusiasm extends towards the audience. I respect the feelings of hardcore horror hounds who reject these movies, but I'm a lifelong fan of the genre who had a great time revisiting both.

This was way more creepier than I remember. Love these indie horrors.

Creepshow 3

Make no mistake, this is terrible DTV trash and has no right to bear the Creepshow moniker.

But I do find it every bit as watchable as something like Troll 1. Meaning there's an attempt at storytelling that seems okay on paper but is simply weak in execution. What really hurts this particular follow-up is that the story formulas are all wrong--these kinds of tales are much more Twilight Zone (focused on twists and encounters and such) rather than Creepshow (which, for two straight movies have successfully pulled off a number of revenge stories with purposeful setups and payoffs--this formula is pretty much absent in #3). It probably shows at the filmmakers didn't really understand the spirit of the thing, especially since the transitions are no longer comic-book-ish and other animations are gaudy (I mean, that opening bit looks like South Park from hell). Worst of all, the film can't even nail down the camp/horror ratio--everything is played for laughs, about as forcibly as Police Academy 7, and it's often cringe-worthy.

The only reason why I grade it this high is because there's one segment I think is actually successful (The Professor's Wife--I mean, that was seriously f**ked up), and the film is surprisingly something I can watch without being bored. But it's definitely bad.

--------------------------------------------------

Beyond the Gates

Not even Barbara Crampton could keep me invested in this plodding, vanilla storyline. Film looks okay and all, but I was bored in the end.

--------------------------------------------------

Sinister 2

Well, the film does get the tone, atmosphere, and uncanniness right. CGI kids just aren't scary though--would have been way more effective if they were unseen.

--------------------------------------------------

The Ghost and Mr. Chicken

Lighthearted, family-friendly fluff. Not nearly as "spooky" as I expected though, the haunted house aspect is surprisingly tame. A fair, watchable movie, but there's many other horror/comedy flicks I'd rather see.

Another homerun by Shout Factory, new transfer looks great, bitrate is consistently in the 37 range. Sturdy slipbox with a nice 32 page squarebound booklet.

And how awesome is Leslie Nielsen in this? Mostly known for comedic roles, he is fantastic here as a jilted lover with a really nasty plan.

Movie Marathon - Phantasm through Phantasm Ravager In my opinion, the only way to enjoy these movies is to watch them back to back, or one per day for five days. They're goofy, they're nonsensical, and they're a hell of a lot of fun. Sure, Ravager looks like a SyFy Channel movie. I really didn't mind. A sorta explanation is revealed in the final(?) film, and I love watching Reggie, Mike, Jody, and The Tall Man do their thing for almost eight hours. (p.s. although the Region A set went out of print almost immediately, the Region B set is just as good and can be bought for about $50. If you are region free, go for it!)

I've heard one or two gripes about Cabin in the Woods. Can't remember the exact criticisms though.

Scream seems to have universal love. Although personally, I think it's just alright. Scary Movie spoiled the whole story for me years in advance, so it didn't really thrill me that much.

Friday the 13th (2009):

Nowhere near a fantastic movie, but still fun and a decent remake. The characters mostly suck, but that just makes it easier to be excited when Jason kills them. And, oh what kills there are. The kills in this one are some of the best of the series and show just how brutal Jason can be.

Yeah, sports really puts a dent in my marathon plans. 3 college games, 4 NFL, 2 NHL & a rugby match left no time at all for movies this weekend.

Damn, lol. I'm kind of glad baseball's the only sport I watch/follow. I decided to watch a movie earlier today since I don't feel like staying up too late today.

*The Burning (1981) A pretty great and fun slasher similar to the early Friday the 13th flicks. Tom Savini provides the special make-up effects and they’re awesome. I think the raft scene just before the kids got a closer look into the canoe was my favorite. The tension was great and then, ‘bam’! Cropsy, who’s the garden shear wielding maniac, has a cool look to him and I sort of wished we’d seen more of him. The protagonist was weak and I didn‘t really care for him. He’s mostly a perv and just flat out weird. The score was kind of odd. Sometimes the synthesizer worked and often times it felt out of place or just wasn’t effective.

3 Dead Trick or Treaters (2016)

This was just released on Blu-ray today. It's an OK horror anthology from a first time feature film director. The film has ZERO dialogue, but does have sound effects, music, screams, etc.

A paperboy comes across the graves of three murdered trick or treaters and attached to each headstone is a horror story...

It's got an interesting feel to it, but I can't say I liked it very much. A bit too abstract and the individual stories just aren't strong enough. I appreciated it more after listening to the director's commentary. It took years to film the various segments. It might grow on me with a re-watch.

Man I had the best time watching this! Laughed my ass off all the way until the end. Some of the very best practical FX which all holds up today 30 years later. Only the digital FX look dated. The characters were all full of personality and spat out great one-liners. The visual comedy from the Klowns was wonderful, the set design was bizarre yet fitting but the music was a real highlight in my opinion. There's barely a flaw in it to be honest. I just wish there were more on-screen, creative and gory deaths like the Biker's. How is this not a widely known classic franchise with 10 sequels like the Friday, Halloween or ANOES franchises? It's so much fun and better than it has any right to be!! Not the best movie I've watched this year but definitely my favourite so far.

The Mummy (1959)

A fun Hammer take on the Mummy. My major complaint is the flashback stuff for Kharis and Ananka, I feel like it goes way too long and it makes me lose interest every time I watch it.

I love it, too. For the record, there aren't any digital effects in this movie.

Last night was the tv version of Halloween II. Man, the editing of this version is nuts. Complete scenes are rearranged and there are weird camera shots spliced into different scenes. There are a surprising amount of new scenes added too. I wonder how planned and structured the editing of this was. I swear whoever edited it was trying to make it their own or something. I am very familiar with the theatrical version so the changes really stand out to me. But it's still entertaining.

Probably no movie tonight because of the World Series. But I'm on mountain time so I might be able to squeeze one in afterwards.
