Really liked it. It's a shame it's tanking so badly since not only will the UHD likely be canceled, but I actually wouldn't have minded getting a sequel to this. I usually love how Laika's films are perfect one-offs, but when the credits started rolling I found myself wishing we could have another expedition with these characters.

Man, this was a complete and total bomb. I thought the trailers looked like a crap but I expected it'd attract the kids, guess not.

That's how I felt when it ended too. The two make a great team, and there could be so many different adventures that could come from this. Even a TV series would work in my opinion.

Man, really sad for Laika. Meant to watch it this past weekend but got caught up running errands. Going to watch it this coming weekend for sure. Here's hoping for both a 4K and 3D Blu-ray release for the film.

You may want to hurry up before Endgame takes over the screens as this won't last long in theaters due to the poor recession.

I think the problem is their animation style. I love it and I'm sure most film fans do too, but I can see how it puts many casual filmgoers off and if the film doesn't really look flashy enough for influence kids into nagging their parents to take them to see it, I just don't see many parents opting to take their kids to go see this.

if people don't want to respect art, that's one thing. but to level criticism at the company that makes the movie for not being overly commercial and ultimately devoid of any character or uniqueness is foolish.

I guess everything should just be that cgi wash of blandness, right? because that looks "flashy" and parents might want to take their kids to it.

let be honest. this movie doesn't have a supersized marketing budget. that's the biggest thing. if this has the hard push where they airwaves were saturated with ads, than maybe it would be modestly successful.

How in the blue hell do you get all of THAT from me saying "their animation style puts people off". Laika's style of animation is wonderfully off-kilter, it's one of their strongest selling points... to cineastes. To casual viewers it's just odd. I have seen this response to animation from my casual friends time and time and time and time and time and time and time again.

Good example is Isao Takahata, one of the greatest animators who has ever lived, but one who chose unconventional, often stripped down, animation styles. There's a reason he's not as well known as Hayao Miyazaki in the west, and it's most definitely NOT because he's a lesser filmmaker.

Now you seem to be deliberately going out of your way to sound as idiotic as possible. Again I never argued this, but yes if Laika want to make a shitload of money, I suppose a bland CG-animated movie centred around talking animated animals probably would have a better chance of raking in a profit. But hey I NEVER ARGUED THAT MAINSTREAM SUCCESS HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH ARTISTIC BRILLIANCE.

Despicable Me films: Utter shite, but astoundingly successful. By pointing this out I am not advocating that studios should make films like this. I appreciate studios like Laika that put more thought and creative flair into their projects.

Thought this was really good. I was expecting it to be my least favorite Laika film since the trailers did nothing for me (but wanted to see it regardless since I'm a fan of them), so I was surprised by how much more I enjoyed it than I thought I would.

I work with quite a few of young people, and quite a number of them think stop motion is "creepy". Like, classics like Rudolph "creep them out". As a big fan of stop motion I can't understand/handle it, and as much as I love Laika I think its going the way of hand drawn animation, which is sad. I watched Early Man and was thoroughly unimpressed, which can't help the art forms reputation. I went and saw Hellboy this weekend instead of Link, and am pretty sure I made the wrong decision.

Likely because one of the most popular stop motion films of all time is Nightmare Before Christmas.

Yeah, I was planning on seeing this with my son. I only recently started taking him to the cinema but he loved going to see movies like Lego Movie 2, Ralph Breaks the Internet, Mary Poppins Returns, and some other kids movies this year. But he absolutely refused to see this with me. Something about it was just a huge turn off for him. Not sure if it was the stop motion or the character designs, but he was quite firm about it.
