I definitely find Peter Jackson's comments interesting about "uniformity." He certainly wasn't considering that when actually making The Hobbit trilogy, seeing as they were shot to be presented in 3D HFR. I wonder if he regrets those choices now in retrospect.
Agreed, it's an odd comment in retrospect when one considers that the first trilogy was captured on standard 24fps 2D 35mm and the second trilogy was shot on HFR 48fps 3D 5K! I wonder what the 3D fans think of Jackson basically ignoring that aspect completely and declaring that he finally feels like he's "finished the journey" by making them look more consistent in 4K 2D HDR?

But yeah, as regards his comments about not wanting them to be too sharp and be more "cinematic" and feeling more of a single piece when watching all six films, I think we have our answer re: the "grain management" that's been applied to these. I include the Hobbitses in that too, because it doesn't look to me - alas, from the caps - that they've dumbed down LOTR to match the searing digital sharpness of the later trilogy, it looks to me like all six movies have had a degree of "management" to tamp down the sharpness and grain/sensor noise respectively.

What I can say, to my naked eye, is that while there does seem to be a slight bit of grain management going on, it is certainly NOT a DNR botch job. I would go so far as to say that it didn’t even receive the same amount of grain management that Back to the Future received, and I thought that looked lovely. There is a fine layer of grain there, just don’t expect the graininess of, say, the recent Top Gun UHD. The green tint is gone (and I’m watching on my Sony A8H which already leans green), fine textures pop, and colors are robust. Shadow and highlight detail, to my eye, are quite good.

This is my favorite film of all time. Having never seen it in theaters, and only going off my prior experiences with the DVDs and Blu-rays, this is, without a doubt, the best the film has ever looked on home video. I... I love it.
Just a quick follow-up: I’ve watched the first ~30 minutes in both Dolby Vision and HDR10, and I think I prefer the HDR10 encode. I felt the highlights tended to push a little too harshly and looked blown out in some places with Dolby Vision on my A8H, where the HDR10 seemed to minimize that. It’s probably down to how my TV interprets the different HDR settings, but for right now I’m enjoying the HDR10 more.

Gulp.
Lol! Considering this is a Warner's release, it wouldn't surprise me completely. They may throw in the Sean Astin announcement video as a deluxe bonus!

They'll probably put that zoom chat on the disc too.

Amazon updated my order to arrive on Saturday now instead of today, I pre-ordered the first day it was live in Canada...can't imagine too many others were ahead of me. Warner Bros must've underestimated the demand for this.

In case anyone is wondering, iTunes Digital Copies (existing purchase) in library are upgrading to 4K HDR as expected :-)

Sorry guys, I didn't see the answers in a brief review of thread and hard to search on the phone, can someone let me know the following:

1. Has the Fellowship of the Ring green tint been fixed?

2. Do the special effects look updated or touched up?

3. Do we know what the ultimate edition will include next summer?

The thing I'm wondering is if Jackson was trying to pull off a 65mm effect.

Yes it’s gone.

He’s worked on them but they looks similar. Can’t answer fully. But there’s been no Lucas.

We don’t know. Bill Hunt says 1 new extra will be added, but I personally don’t believe him and will wait and see.

Would be cool to have a 35mm print to compare to.

65 with Vaseline all over the lens, sure. You keep mentioning Jackson and 65mm over and over and over but, honestly, he's over it. They wanted to do it (apparently), but they were never ever going to be able to do it on the budget they had and so it was quickly put out of their minds, Jackson got on with shooting what he had rather than what he didn't have.

Anyone with the set does it redeem in the Extended Cuts in 4K or just the regular versions?

I bought the plain Jane edition at Best Buy earlier today. I wish that all 4K UHD box sets would be packaged like this. No frills, and easy to handle.

An employee told me they have separate stock for online orders. Until then, I assumed the number on the website was the number on the floor.
Like I said, it's probably not for large items.

I really wish I had not read this. Now I'm going to be nervous until my package arrive.

I ventured to a Target 45 minutes away this morning to replace both The Hobbit and LOTR standard 4K sets that I received in the mail due to loose discs / shipping damage.

After opening both replacement sets at home, I discovered several 1/2" parallel / diagonal scratches in an area near the outer edge of two of the discs in my LOTR set. These are clearly due to the manufacturing process (likely machinery). I do not have a 4K setup to test them to see if they'll play all the way through without a hitch. Has anyone with scratched discs from these two sets had a problem getting them to play? I hate to go back a 2nd time to take care of this, but for $90 a pop Warner Brothers should have made sure this wasn't a problem.
