Star Wars:
7 movies Clone Wars shorts Current animated series A couple of low budget TV specials Good for selling action figures and video games. A bit stagnant over the years with Lucas over controlling. Star Trek: 11 movies 5 series 1 animated series More intelligent approach to science fiction. Obviously not catering to kids and teenagers. Does have its ups and downs but overall have a better and richer universe. No Jar Jar Binks and dumbed down battle droids. Star Trek for the win. |

Also, can you explain "more intelligent approach to science fiction"? Lucas was able to show us the battle between good and evil, war among planets and sneaky political tactics which ultimately changed a Republic into an Empire. As far as i know, when Star Trek was first shown to the world, it took kids and teenagers by storm. Sure, that was not the makers' intent, but it did happen. My parents were into Star Trek when it first came out. My friend's dad was into it as a teen, and now my friend (also a teen) has been sucked into it. Even though Roddenberry's original vision was a little more Utopian, the original series did attempt to comment on some of the social issues of the day including the VietNam War. The Next Generation also did this to some degree. Star Wars would have us believe that there is a more clearcut separation between good and evil but life is full of grey areas. Star Wars has one main plot line where a major bad guy is manipulating events. Star Trek shows in many instances that good characters will sometime have to make distasteful choices in order to preserve to welfare of many and sometime you may have to team up with your adversary in order to overcome a bigger common threat. As far as appeals to teens and young kids, the initial fans of the series were mostly those of late high school and college age. Star Trek was never meant to be a shoot 'em up show. And even when there are battles, it's more like naval carriers warfare. Star Wars is more of the aerial dogfight variety which tends to appeal to the younger crowd inherently because of ships blowing up and not having strategy behind the fight where systems will have to be taken out in order to defeat the enemy. Also, the current "the Clone Wars" series which I do like is undoubtedly targeting younger audiences. The reason that newer audience is taking notice of the latest Star Trek movie is because it is set up with more action to appeal to the masses. I've seen the movie and definitely like it because the filmmakers make a conscious choice of showing us a movie that introduce new ideas breaking away from the old mold but at the same time pay respect to those elements that made the original great for the fans. However, there is still a theme behind to movie. Grief over personal loss can overcome an ordinary person and make him evil (Nero). Video games, wise, there is no doubt that Star Wars dominate. The reason for this is not because Star Wars is better, it's just that video game companies don't understand what makes an interesting Star Trek game. The best Star Trek game that I've played is Star Trek Legacy. This game works similar to Battlestations Midway in that you are controlling a fleet of ships. There is a different tactic to running a fleet where you are to deploy ships in certain manners to achieve the goal. You also have to keep an eye on ship systems and repair in mid battle to sustain your forces. Star Wars games are more of whoever shoot down the enemy first wins. In fact, if there was a Star Trek game that can combine the fleet battle elements, somewhat open world environment, and third person shooter, it would be unbeatable (Mass Effect + the Godfather + Battlestations Midway in the Star Trek universe). I don't expect you or anyone to change your mind. I like both Star Trek and Star Wars but for different reasons but I do think the Star Trek is a bit better than Star Wars when taken as a whole. I'm sure you don't mean that the video games have been stagnant, seeing as how in the last couple of years we've had Battlefront, Battlefront 2 and Force Unleashed come out. Which are IMO the BEST Star Wars games ever made. {and some of the best video games ever made} Logan |
