Youre wife will love that you saved money, and you will have a bad a$$ system with plenty of bass.
MillionDollarMan, listen to this guy! He's the one that recommended me my setup, and I was limited to a 1500 dollar budget. I have since added the rear surrounds and risers, but other than that, it's a fully crackinhedz recommended system. The bass from the eD subs is incredible. You can feel it in your chest! Unfortunately, as others have said, eD is an online retailer only, located in Iowa (if I remember correctly), but they're completely worth it. Alternatively, if you wanted to really go all out and have a fuller sound-field, I'd go this route:

I'd set aside $400-$500 for a receiver
$25 for cables/wires from monoprice.com

and then I'd get these.....
FRONTS $1,000 pair

CENTER $400

SURROUNDS $450 pair

SUB $350

All for under $3k, and would be a mighty impressive setup in my opinion.
However, that's maxing out your money. If that's really what you want to do, I wouldn't hesitate for a second. Those speakers are just gorgeous and if I had the money, I'd upgrade to something like those.

I'd have to throw my vote behind a set of Paradigm speakers. Granted, I haven't done a TON of speaker shopping, but most reviews I've read say you'd be hard pressed to get better 'bang for buck' than Paradigm. I must say I'm very happy with what I've got, and it's on the lower end of their offering spectrum!
If you spend a decent amount on a Denon or Onkyo receiver and the rest on 5.1 Paradigm speakers, you'll be very happy...

In reality the most accurate speakers are very very neutral or flat. That way there is no emphasis bumps in the midrange like a warm speaker tends to have. Being that they are the most accurate, technically a neutral speaker is what you want. As many will find this is not always the case and we find ourselves preferring a warmer or brighter or laid-back or whatever kind of speaker.

Alot of people actually prefer a "bright" speaker for HT. This is because they tend to be very dynamic and allow you to hear all the small and subtle nuances within the film.

Alot of people prefer warm speakers for music because they like the midrange "push". That way there is not an over emphasis of bass or treble.
This can sound very nice, but its not entirely accurate.
I agree that it is personal preference, and in that I think "bright" speakers tend to sound "louder" because of the extention of the highs, but as far as hearing small subtle nuances I think can be found in any speaker that has incredible detail. Reviews of PSB and Energy speakers show that they have flat on axis frequency response, along with the Monitor Audios reviews describe these with a warm sound and incredible clarity and depth, so I guess warmth is being used to describe the lack of brightness. Which I DO personally prefer because I feel I get incredible detail without overly extended highs.

IMPO, because warmer sounding speakers(or less bright) can still have incredible clarity, depth and still maintain flat on axis frequency response, they can excell with movies. I am not an expert audiophile so I could be way off, but this is JMO.

EDIT, I see you are a B&W dealer too, my dad has had 603 S2s for about 8 years, I find these to be pretty neutral with great detail. I love watching movies at his place. He does not have HD audio because his Sony ES5200 is too old, so is his S1 BPD, but clairty and detail are awesome. I watch movies there about once a month. I judge a lot of speakers off of what I grew up listening too, which were these...

A bright speaker like klipsch tends to have extremely high sensitivity (<95dbs), and that is why they are louder.

And you're absoutely right about hearing subtle details in any speaker that is great with detail. The thing is there are alot of speakers great with detail, but some just excel and go above and beyond what others can do in that regard. Sometimes its just a matter of becoming very familar with several speakers and understanding their specific nuances that they excell at.

Funny you mention the 603 S2's, i just replaced the midrange driver in a pair yesterday and was jamming out with them for awhile. Great speaker, nice build. Great bang for the buck.

The current 683's are the same way, just awesome bang for the buck.

Should make this into a poll.

crackinhedz or BetaMan's system.

I don't know much, well about many things, but especially subs. I bought mine from B&W the same time I bought the rest. Been happy with it and it is set to be very subtle, no THUMP! THUMP! THUMP! Don't really notice it until I turn it off, then I notice something is missing. I feel it should be this way, my livingroom isn't a club playing 50 cent.

I have said, and would vote for, BetaMan's B&W speakers with a Marantz 5003 is an excellent choice. No comment on sub because I don't know a thing about subs, except for mine.

Really enjoy this site, have learned a lot about projectors, TVs, lossless audio, SACDs, and the topic that shouldn't be mentioned in polite company or at the dining table (grain). It's a great resource and people like Beta and crackin are gods.

Yes! Create a poll of B&W, Polk, Klipsch, Energy, Paradigm, PSB, and Monitor. And then go out and buy which one sounds best to you!

Those two systems are apples and oranges, both good, but different price points and they bring different things to the table.

OP, perhaps it would be best to just go to the bank on Monday and pull out the $3K and set it aside, that way the wife can deduct it like the accountant she is and you can spend a little time audtioning the speakers you want to consider. Then just give her back whatever you don't spend.

Where do you live? (city, state, zip)

Basically at this point you are just getting what we would want to consider for $3K and not what you want. The only way to be truly happy is to go listen for yourself. Take a few suggestions and then go listen to them. Call off a day and just speaker hunt...(unless your in sales, then you don't have to call off... I love sales) Not only that but you can also then get some quotes, play the dealers against each other, you said the Paradigm dealer charges more then MSRP, you can say well I got this quote for B&W or PSBs and they are giving me a killer deal $3500 worth of speakers and receiver for $2600, if you don't want my business, there are other excellent speakers out there and dealers that do want to make a sale, and walk out, sometime you have to treat them like a car dealer. Then when you get it down to 2 or 3 options take the wife and get her thoughts on them and the pricing, and then make your final decision.

Prerich,

Why so serious?

I am aware they are different systems, and different prices. Just because I didn't list of the differences and similarities doesn't mean I'm not aware of them. So far on this thread crackin and Beta are 2 that have given good advice. Why not see where others stand, for fun. Do you post comments just for the sake of trying to make others annoyed? Why else do you state the obvious.

I know there are a million and 1 choices for speakers and AVRs, polls are just for fun and mean nothing. Anyway, the OP has to listen to some stuff and make his own choice.

Some of you .....know how to suck the fun out of every thread and turn a person's post around to put them on the defensive.

I am done. I have had enough with you guys. There are a few people I've met in this forum that I can talk with, and I will PM them. You know who you are and I thank you for the advice over the last 6 months.

edit: July 4th, Why was my message edited and my comment on mods removed? Big Brother did you remove my comment and replace it with .... ? Not cool, all I said was some mods can suck the fun out of threads. Is this an American site? or is it controlled by communist China? Happy 4th of July! Go ahead and delete this if you want, but changing what people write and read is something out of 1984. Are any of the mods in the Mininstry of Truth?

Little dramatic? I don't see anything offensive about his post, so I am not sure about why you are on the defensive. They are two different systems and both bring different things to the table. And yes, my post was being sarcastic. I think every speaker choice should come down to nothing else but auditioning and personal preference. He has been given some great choices, now go out and listen. As far as users asking for mod status, ummm yeah he and I are both mods. But, I think you will find most of the mods at this forum pretty easy going and far from wanting to suck the fun out of any thread. Most breathe life into one.

Anyway, since it was your last post I don't expect response. Nice having you and hope you return.

Travis.... I don't recall if English is your first language or not, so forgive me for implying it may not be..... either way, I think perhaps you're taking his post a little too seriously.....

We're all friends here (except Crackin' .... gotta keep an eye out for the bat!!)
Some people just tend to get irked by polls (I find some amusing, some good for getting a feel for what the majority here thinks, and others simply good for nothing!)

Either way.... have a good holiday if you celebrate it, and come back to join the fun!

P.S. I love Blu-ray, hate grain, and don't like Polk, Infinity, JBL or BOSE.
Couple of points (and I'm laughing while I'm writing this ... really )
1. I didn't mean to offend you - I know how polls can go - but I also know how things can erupt. I'm all for engaging discussion and I know that both speakers bring different things to the table.
2. I don't have to ask for mod status ... I am one (that was meant to be funny )
3. I couldn't agree with the poll because it didn't include JasonR's system as well !

You took my post too personal - not hammerin' ya Didn't mean it to come across that way - apologies to you if it came across wrong (obviously it did).

P.S. I love BD, don't mind grain (my eyesight is too bad to really see it anyway), and enjoy models from every maker you stated you hate for one purpose or another.

OP did I read your paradigm dealer is charging more than MSRP?
If it were not for that, I would strongly recommend the setup you listed Although the paradigm monitor line is slightly on the bright side, this doesn't discount the fact these speakers are built with quality materials, inhouse, have beautiful bold looks , and most importantly offer a full dynamic clean sound. For both music and movies. On top of that Paradigms customerservice is second to none. Please don't underestimate the quality of Paradigm

Default Update!!!!!!!!

Before I start just wanted to tell everybody have a good 4th,So I went with my wife Today to hear the B&W,Paradigm (again),KLipsch,Infinity,Sony and Monster audio I think it was called.Still have not found a Monitor audio dealer .
Well I was very Disapointed with the sony I was expecting to hear good speakers from them, Boy was I wrong Infinity and monster audio was out the question too.First was the B&W I have to say when I went into this shop it didnt feal like a store at all it was weird there lay out was like a big living room. After listing to them I loved the sound on them were so clear if you closed your eyes you felt like there was actually a band there. They also looked really nice. The only thing was the action scenes in movies didnt really move me the movies just didnt sound right.
Next was Klipsch right at the bat wife did not want big Black speakers. Her first question was do you guys have another color? Now klipsch sounded really good on movies OMG was right in your face made you feal like you were there too BUT!!!!!!! as soon as a put in the Music it sounded like car speakers the way it would sound in a car system.Again Im not bashing Klipsch just how they sounded to me.Overall I liked the way they looked with the grill off.
Next we went back to the Paradigm dealer first song we tried was Requiem for a dream by Mozart.OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!How clear and detailed but yet again movies were not the way the Klipsch sounded.Overall I loved the Rosenut color and the huge center the paradigm had,not to mention has anybody seen the DSP 3200 HUGE!!!!!!!

Well rember I told you I hade 3gs Guess what I have more money now for it ohh yeah I now have 3,123.82 yup.As far as recievers go I was sad that I couldnt find any Elites so I was going with a denon that cost 550.00.I found out today that infact pioneer is ready to ship out new Elites and I want one So I know my reciever is going to cost more now.Iam I weird that im hooked on a reciever that I have never seen or heard?I just love the reviews and the way it looks. So many good things I have heard about an Ice amp.

Well, Sony is definitely not known for great speakers. They make solid budget speakers, but that's about it. Again, I think you should audition some Energy speakers if you can. They are great for music and home theater. See if you can locate a dealer near you to check them out.

Invest in a high quality reciever, the speakers are only as good as what they get sent to them. I'm saving for a new reciever now, Integra, Rotel, Denon, Pioneer Elite, haven't decided yet.
