If not this December, I think we'll get Dog Day Afternoon by Criterion next year as well. Anyway, both movies are in that group of really classic films that a UHD release is not a matter of "if", but "when".

The Wiz Disc Replacement Program:

Quote:
Here are the full details regarding THE WIZ replacement program:

We've made a correction to our 4K and Blu-ray editions of THE WIZ to fix issues with the feature ATMOS soundtrack.
We have also added an additional soundtrack to the release, the original theatrical 70mm 6-track soundtrack.

Please note that we are prioritizing replacements for fans who pre-ordered directly from Criterion.com, so those will go out first in the coming weeks, but anyone who has these first pressing discs is eligible for a replacement, regardless of where it was purchased.

If you would like us to add you to our queue now, please send us the following to orders@criterion.com:
  • Your name and US or Canadian mailing address that will be valid for at least the next month; please type this information out in the body of the email
  • A photo of the defective disc(s) with your name and date written on the front/art side (using a sharpie or paint marker - you can write this info on the lighter portion of the disc, and take a photo against a light source so your name and date are visible). You do not need to break the disc.
  • Note that if you purchased the 4K UHD + Blu-ray version, we need a photo of both marked discs; if you have the Blu-ray version only, a photo of the single disc is sufficient
  • A snapshot of your original purchase receipt, if available

Replacement discs are estimated to start going out in late September to mid October.

Tracking will be emailed to you automatically from our Pitney shipping account once the discs are being packed.

Finally, please hold on to the issue disc(s) for now but discard them as soon as the replacement versions are received successfully.

If you have not yet purchased THE WIZ or plan to purchase additional copies, it will be back in stock later this month (September) and the updated version will have the text SECOND PRESSING on the cover art and the discs.

I am delighted to report that the experience did not disappoint and was well, well worth the exertion. Forget DisneyWorld: that closet is my Magic Kingdom.

All of the Criterion staff on site at TIFF deserve to be highly commended, especially Ellen whose genuine kindness and generousity of spirit were clearly evident. The time she spent taking care of myself and others with accessibility needs was truly touching and an experience I will not soon forget in and of itself. A wonderful embodiment of Mr. Mulvaney's legacy and the film community he has built.

My picks: Klute, This Is Spinal Tap 4K, and The Wind Will Carry Us (my first foray into Iranian cinema, and Kiarostami's Close-Up was already sold out).
Lovely to hear.

As for Iranian cinema, if you seek out 'A Moment of Innocence' I'm sure you'll not be disappointed. It's one of the most magical films I've ever seen. I believe it's on YouTube.

The Koker Trilogy is also highly entertaining and lovely. I have the Criterion of it. Beautiful presentation.

This had nothing to do with your post. I had posted in the wrong thread

Yes, it's previously been confirmed to be coming.

Cremildo already answered that, but for future reference, Criterion provides accurate, not auto-generated English subtitles for their Closet videos these days.

By the way, this is the potato field scene she mentioned. Not sure it's a potato field, though.

It's pure noir - 69 minutes so the fast pace makes you overlook plot devices of coincidence, bad luck, bad timing, but then it is a noir so that will happen. Ann Savage IS savage and she's only 24 but def. acts like she's got a lot more hard road behind her. The plot's luckless slob Tom Neal ended up being a noir plot in real life.

As an aside, Neal - a boxer - beat up Franchot Tone, who I saw in "Mickey One." Even though it was a few years later, Tone's face looked pretty rough. I wonder if that was partially the result of Neal's beat-down.
Speaking of Tom Neal and Franchot Tone, their brawl was the result of a love triangle between Neal, Tone and Barbara Payton. Payton is definitely a cautionary tale about the dangers of fame, alcohol, getting involved with the wrong types of people, and having absolutely zero sense of propriety when it comes to behavior. Hollywood may have been known for depravity, but even Payton was too much for it. I highly recommend her ghostwritten memoir, "I Am Not Ashamed." Frankly, she should have been ashamed. It's bonkers to me that Tone married Payton after the brawl. If that were me, Neal and Payton would have been way too much drama.

Neal ended up in prison for murdering his second wife, though the charge was reduced to involuntary manslaughter and he was released after 6 years.

It's actually insane that Tone ended up involved with these people as he came from a very prestigious and upper crust family, and he had made his career playing more sophisticated, urbane men. Tone is also rumored to be the source of the famous feud between Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. Davis and Tone appeared in 1935's "Dangerous" (which won Davis her first Oscar). She was desperately in love with him; but he ended up marrying Crawford.

I actually really like Franchot Tone. He's good in a lot of his early precodes, and he makes a great villain, like in "Phantom Lady" (1944).

My older sister and her then boyfriend let me tag along with them when they went to see Network, Dog Day Afternoon, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and a few other films when I was then around 12-13 years old. I was blown away by these movies. These films were instrumental with me getting into and loving cinema. and they opened the doors for me to discover film as an art form. It has been my lifetime love.

So simple yet well executed.

A simple conversation, a cigarette and lighter, and two pairs of eyes that tell the whole story. All under a minute as well (At least the part I'm thinking about)
