I had so many issues with Warner and Universal "flipper" HD DVDs...hoping they just package in a 2nd disk like Disney has done with Up and Monsters Inc.

I agree with the OP. This is useless when they could focus on Jurassic Park, Psycho and a million other eagerly anticipated releases.

Because these don't require any work to prepare for release.

I think its great that they are doing both the bd and dvd. not everyone owns bluray. i wish paramount did that with the new star trek movie.

I honestly thought someone would end up getting a BLU/DVD combo for it.

There were early rumors that Wal-Mart would, but alas they were just that.

It'll be a good short term deal for the foreseeable future. It's really just a bonus right now, it'd be nice to have both formats until I get a portable blu-ray player to replace my portable DVD one. As long as the blu-rays are priced the same, with a bonus DVD included, it's a good thing.

I like the idea, but I rather have the company move forward with un-released movies, rather than go back and re-release movies that are already out on BD. Either way, it's a win-win situation for the average buyer.

I wish every Blu-ray came with a DVD copy (including the ones I double-dipped from DVD in the first place)

I think it's great that Universal is doing this (although I'm not too excited about the titles mentioned so far)

Studios are all about making money (unfortunately). Jurassic Park would make Universal more money than rehashing crappy titles for people who are still "on the fence".

I'll take this over the DVD being glued to the other side of a HD disc anyday. HD DVD combos were shit.

As long as it doesn't raise the price of the blu-ray I'm fine with it. In fact, for the animated titles I'm really glad they come with the dvd as well so we can take it with us on the road as my 2 year old daughter can watch them on the portable dvd player in the car.

I seriously doubt there would be a price increase and if there is it will be very marginal. The only reason Universal is doing this is because these titles are having enough trouble selling as it is so they figure if they throw in the DVD as an extra incentive it will attract more buyers so a notable price raise is highly unlikely IMO.

I'm all for it, as long as they don't decide to charge a premium for the included DVD copy

Again. Child's Play got released on Blu-Ray with a DVD copy. You can buy it for $14.99.

I like the idea of BD and DVD sold together. I especially like the idea of the BD and DVD in separate cases. The marginal cost of adding a DVD is less than $1 ( and probably significantly less than that). This way, I can give or loan out the DVD to my family while keeping my BD's safe. It also gives me the option of taking a second copy to my second home. And, to some extent, it does increase BD sales - I can now purchase a BD copy of a movie my daughter wants to watch. Without the combos, many of these movies would be bought on DVD only so my daughter can watch them in her room (where I don't have to watch them)

We are all different people in different situations with different wants and desires. In an ideal world, studios would let us buy our movies in any format we would like, such as Movie only (+/- digital copy)(+/- DVD), Movie and Special Features (+/- digital copy)(+/- DVD). But it is not practical for studios to release 8 different packages. As I understand it, the Universal DVD's will come in separate cases, and DVD-haters are free to burn them on their BD altars. For me, and a great many others, there is still a benefit to the DVD. Has anyone manufactured a portable BD player or an automobile BD player? Most laptops in current use have DVD players, but no BD capability.

In the end, either the program will work and Universal will keep doing this; or it will fail and they will stop. With this particular group of titles I doubt there will be great success, but we will have to wait and see.

I agree that combos are much more effective with family titles, but it most likely costs the studios pennies on the dollar to add a DVD copy and I am sure their research (along with other studios) indicates that a higher percentage of people are likely to buy a Blu-Ray with a DVD copy if there is not a noticeably higher price associated with the title. I personally have no need for a DVD copy of "8 Mile" as I would probably only watch the BD disc, but it does feel like there is more value with the combo discs. I have several family members who have picked up the Disney Blu-Ray combo even though they don't even own a Blu-Ray player right now (just DVD, but expect to buy a BD player within 12 months).

And if the combo discs help Blu-Ray to expand to more homes, that means the studio will release more and more catalog titles.

And I would much rather have a DVD copy than a digital copy.
