Lucas: The special edition, that’s the one I wanted out there. The other movie, it’s on VHS, if anybody wants it. ... I’m not going to spend the, we’re talking millions of dollars here, the money and the time to refurbish that, because to me, it doesn’t really exist anymore. It’s like this is the movie I wanted it to be, and I’m sorry you saw half a completed film and fell in love with it. But I want it to be the way I want it to be. I’m the one who has to take responsibility for it. I’m the one who has to have everybody throw rocks at me all the time, so at least if they’re going to throw rocks at me, they’re going to throw rocks at me for something I love rather than something I think is not very good, or at least something I think is not finished.

AP: Do you pay much attention to fan reactions to your choices?

Lucas: Not really. The movies are what the movies are. ... The thing about science-fiction fans and “Star Wars” fans is they’re very independent-thinking people. They all think outside the box, but they all have very strong ideas about what should happen, and they think it should be their way. Which is fine, except I’m making the movies, so I should have it my way.

Then you are failing, do you work for Lucasfilm? They are experts at half truths, smoke and mirrors, and that is all you are achieving. Post ACTUAL uncompressed blu ray footage, and if that looks like the HDTV rip or the production Blu rip, well done. Until then it is pointless. People are asking the question, the answer is - no-one actually knows yet. The MKV files have astounded some people, so the outlook is positive.

It is just a shame that the films themselves may not be as impressive.

There is no way such a high profile release will not excel in terms of audio and picture quality, and lets face it, it is all Lucasfilm has left to drag the naysayers and haters back into the fold. The reviews will be outstanding from a technical point of view (all the preview reviews have confirmed as much), not so good on the content front.

I don't know, at this point I doubt it would make much change, the rage as reach a all time level of high on this subject.

That does not make sense.
No, the content is identical to the '04 DVD (colour timing, errors etc) but in HD demo quality.

There are quite a few countries that had a Sith VHS release, the US wasn't one of them though.

No! Some prefer the DVD because of the missing alterations that they feel make's the story less interesting.

png compression is basically not really noticeable and standard when comparing different kind of screenshots to each other. what you see here are shots from the BD and not some kind of .mkv encode.

I wish more people on this forum could mentally separate the ideas of sharpness and color.

Yes, the blu-rays are sharper - that is expected. However, the color is horribly dark and loses some nicer details in the blacks. The blu-ray image makes it look like I'm watching through a pair of Real3D glasses.

Side note - it would be funny if Vader said no like the following instead of the longer emoting.

no, sarcasm is the lowest form of wit. The HD discs will be demo quality for the '04 DVD, geddit?

Really this place is like a playground, it really makes it clear why there are thousands of pointless posts made in a Blu Ray forum.

It's all about what it does to the overall feel of the movie, not just "adding 2 words". If he added the words "if" and "or" to a throwaway line, nobody would care.

Imagine the scene with Michael Corleone telling Fredo "I knew it was you Fredo, and it breaks my heart... *POOT* ... I farted".

BOOM changes the tone of the whole movie.

It's easy to trivialize something if you try hard enough.

Honestly the change is offensive to me because before it was subtle. Now it smacks you over the head. All of his changes seem to be changing something subtle into something that beats you over the head. It's just insulting to our collective intelligence.

I am probably still going to buy the set, but sheesh, how much unnecessary tinkering can possibly be done to 30 year old films.

Anyway, none of the new changes are as bad as Hayden in ROTJ or "Jedi Rocks", but in their totality I don't think a single addition has added anything to the movies. The fixes are appreciated (landspeeders etc.) but the stuff like Jedi Rocks that just throws off the whole tone of the scene are still baffling.

You do have to realize that Merlin is right. The shots that you are posting are compressed and are not a representation of the final product that will be put onto the market. Just because it is a rip of the Blu's doesn't mean that that is what the blu quality will be. An mkv is a file type that is used for high definition video on computers. The fact is what you are posting are screenshots from a (compressed from the original blu) mkv file.
