While the PS3 can/will be able to decode the DTS-HD MA and TrueHD and send it via PCM to a receiver via HDMI, I would recommend thinking ahead a bit and realizing that if you ever decide to get a standalone BD player, this option will go away.
Additionally, the more expensive receivers have additional benefits as well. Think ahead before making the final decision. - Bogdan |

Sony STR-DG920 Receiver Handles 110 Watts Per Channel, 1080p and 24Hz
![]() Sony's latest STR-DG920 receiver looks nice (it's got a similar look to my cheap-o Sony receiver in a box and other Sony receivers), but has plenty of functionality as well. There's the 7.1 channel support, 1080p + 60/24Hz, four HDMI ports (woo!), Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby True HD, dts High Resolution Audio, dts HD Master Audio, xvyCC, Deep Color Sony's Digital Media Port (networking and connectivity with iPods and other stuff), is XM Connect-and-Play ready (5.1) and has 20-30 second auto-setup. It'll be available in June for $600. |

I have the Sony DH700 (http://www.amazon.com/Sony-STR-DH700...7562523&sr=8-1)
Works great with my PS3. Some of the specs aren't very impressive but for $200 it gets the job done. I too was looking at some pricier models at the time, but since the PS3 basically decodes everything, I couldn't pass up a deal like that (got mine for around $250 when it first came out). Good luck! |

The video is fine, I am concerned with the audio, and still not 100% clear that the Optical cable is actually better than the HDMI. Maybe if I got a more powerful receiver, then I wouldn't have the 48kHz limits? I do need to do more reading... ie not sure whether PCM is better than Dolby , or whether my 6.1 set up is affected by 5.1 output option... Dale |

I had a similar set up to you. This is what I did.
PS3 connected to the TV via HDMI (for video only) PS3 connected to the AVR via optical (for sound only) Then adjust your PS3 settings to apply the above. When watching movies, set everything to Bitstream. Worked for me, although I'm running low on sleep and I'm not 100% sure that is what you are even asking. ![]() |

Since you cannout use HDMI for audio, you have two choices. You can use RCA connections, which will give you a stereo downmix. Or, you can use an optical connection, which can be be either stereo or discrete 5.1. If you set the PS3 output to PCM, then you will be limited to stereo because the S/PDIF protocol used with optical can only send two channels of PCM. However, if you set the PS3 to bitstream, it will send encoded multichannel audio (DD 5.1 or DTS, depending on the movie) to your receiver. That's clearly your best choice. When the input to your receiver is stereo (RCA cables or PCM over optical ), you only get multichannel audio by applying a digital signal processing mode in the receiver - something like Dolby ProLogic II or DTS Neo:6. That extracts audio from the L/R channels and reroutes it to the other speakers. It's OK. But, matrixed surround will never be as enveloping as discrete 5.1. If you want to hear the soundtrack the way it was mixed, then you need to set the PS3 to bitstream using an optical connection. |

The DTS-MA and Dolby True HD decoding are great to have. The issue is if the PS3 does do the decode is there any other features that will be more useful. There is a lot of nice units on clearance right now which lack DTS-MA and Dolby True HD. I would recommended looking at your setup and determing what needs you have. How many HDMI inputs do you need? Do you need Component/composite/svideo input to HDMI output? Would Audyssey MultEQxt Room EQ autosetup be something you are interested in? The 605 is a nice receiver but does not do some desired things (1080p component to HDMI). The 705 could fall in your price range. Also how much time do you want to spend looking. The Onkyo 605 will meet your needs, and so will the Sony DG-910 (both can be gotten in the 350 range with minimal looking).
For me DTS-MA and Dolby True HD did not matter as much as getting the best receiver in my budget that could do 7.1 over HDMI. I ended up with a Denon AVR-987 (2807) since it best matched my needs, and some Kef 2005.2 speakers. I am very happy with the sound quality, and functionality of the AV receiver. Only other recommendation is if other people plan to use your setup get a Harmony remote. RabidBunny Last edited by RabidBunny; 04-17-2008 at 04:53 PM. |
