Default Return my Sony BDP-S1?

So, today is day 30 of my BDP-S1 ownership experience, so if I want to return the unit for a full refund it has to be today. I'm just wondering if I should just keep it, or wait out for a Gen-2 player. Or should I return it at CC and repurchase it at BB for another 30 days? I do have some BD movies scheduled for delivery from NetFlix, plus it makes it easier to watch my AVCHD files. Let me know what you think. Thanks.

Ben

Will there be a firmware update so that the unit will play CDs? I'm just worried that after the Gen-2 player comes out from Sony, that they'll forget about supporting their Gen-1 Flagship.

The Sony BDP-S1 doesn't have the laser to read CDs, so no firmware upgrade for that. This is a Pioneer player with a Sony logo. I don't expect them to forget about you anytime soon.

Have you ever heard a Blu-Ray (or HD-DVD) player play back a CD? The ones I've heard sound terrible! Not much of a loss as far as I'm concerned.

Benk777, returning the Sony BLU-RAY player is something that you are going to have to decide. If you don’t have a CD player and you absolutely want the BLU-RAY player to play CD’s then return it and get a PLAYSTATION 3 which plays CD’s even Super Audio CD’s. Just remember the Sony BDP-S1 and the Pioneer BLU-RAY player are targeted to highend early adopters that look at CD play back as a minor issue. The optics in the players were never designed to play CD’s and the manual clearly says it will not play CD’s. For someone that owns a display that accept 1080P/24 signal then the Sony BDP-S1 and Pioneer BDP-HD1 are the only BLU-RAY players that support that feature. If you wait for second generation Sony and Pioneer units I am sure they will have CD support and 1.3 HDMI support like the Playstation 3 has. Playstation 3 lacks 1080P/24 signal output which is a small issue since very few displays accept 1080P/24.
Some people will buy and return stuff at retail stores every 30 days so that they can have the latest equipment and have the option to extend the return policy. The problem with doing this is that some people start using retail stores as 30 day free equipment rental places. Also it is a pain for people to pack up equipment every 30 days and return it.

I could not imagine returning my BDP-S1. Not only is it a great Blu-ray player it is also a great player for SD disks. Besides that, my guess is the second generation player will ship sometime in the fourth quarter (just in time for the holidays). At this point I fully committed to the technology and hope that very soon it will take over as the only next generation DVD technology in the market. I can't tell you how many friends have purchased Blu-ray after watching a demo at my house. But am I obsessed? Maybe
