I thought the hardware wasn't there despite it using an HDMI 1.3 chip. It'd be nice if it could bitstream though...

What would be the benefit of bitstreaming the audio as opposed to setting the PS3 to Linear PCM and allowing a receiver to do the work? I'm not criticizing the post, I'm honestly curious what (if any) difference there would be.

I may be wrong, but I believe that you have it opposite. When you have the PS3 set to Linear PCM, the system decodes the track, not the receiver. When bitstreamed, the receiver does the work (also shows up as DTS HD-MA and Dolby TrueHD on the display of the receiver).

I believe Sony does know something we don't, it's been awhile since we got DTS-HDMA decoding, that people didn't think we were going to get. There are a sufficient number of players available now that can bitstream, so now would be a good time for them too pull the rabbit out of their hat and show us all how the PS3 can Bitstream as well.

to me it would make sense that a dedicated receiver made to do sound would handle decoding sound better than the PS3. Whether there is any difference, i probalby couldn't tell. But i would really like to be able to bitstream the audio from the ps3. that is the only negative thing i have with the ps3 right now.

Decoding is Decoding, end results is the same. Louder is not better. Negative??? I like the fact that I did not have to spend another $1000 to get a new reciever just for HD audio. Also the fact that the amount of HD reciecers was minimal at the time the PS3 came out.

For all you that like to see the logo....press display on your PS3 remote, you can SEE "DolbyTrueHD" or "DTSMA7.1" Thats enough for me.

don't get me wrong but can someone explain to me why does the ps3 have hdmi1.3 version?
I mean, isn't the purpose of that version to be able to bitstream hd audio?
If the ps3 had version 1.2 it could still pass the MPCM audio as it does know right ? so what is the benefict of this? Only picture quality or sony has a secret ?
