Think about it this way. CDs are lossless audio since they are not lossily compressed. But they are only 16-bit 44.1kHz audio and not bit-to-bit from the master tapes, which can be 20/24-bit at 96kHz.

In the earlier BD releases, MPCM was used to deliver lossless audio but at reduced resolution (16-bit 48kHz) but now with Dolby TrueHD and DTS HDMA, master-tape resolution is becoming the norm. Not to say that all of the lossless audio you'll be seeing would be 20/24-bit either since some 80s/90s movies were mixed at CD resolution.

And why do some blu ray disks have 2 HD audio if they are said to be the same?
Like 300 with dolby true Hd and pcm....
omg sorry for the SO off topic
Just to assist people in getting the best audio possible.

All receivers must have DACs because it converts digital audio signal to analog audio signal. Analog signal is what's needed to drive your speakers.
RAW Digital Bitstream->Decoder-> Digital audio signal->DACs->Analog audio signal->Speaker

That is why I said the PS3 has stereo DACs because using the AV Multiout, you only get stereo analog audio. Using optical out, the audio signal stays in digital form (including the DD/DTS bitstream). Using HDMI, the MPCM audio also stays in the digital realm.

Why did sony choose stereo DAC's? does it even matter?
Makes the PS3 cheaper to produce. Quality DACs aren't cheap. And it doesn't matter much since most people would opt for optical and HDMI to get them multichannel out.

The OP asked why the PS3 only has stereo outputs. I answered that it is cheaper and used the price difference between the S350 and S550 as an example. Not the best example, since there are other differences, too. The $100 difference between the Panasonic models is a better example because I doubt that DivX, a coax output, and those sexy feet come anywhere close to accounting for the $100 premium you pay for a BD55. Given the competitive environment for game consoles, I think Sony made a good business decision to leave multichannel anlog outputs out of the PS3. An extra $50-100 would be a rather significant price increase when a PS3 already costs more than an Xbox or a Wii.

We all know the ps3's HDMI chip cant bitsream HD audio, does sony know something that we dont?

I believe Sony does know something we don't, it's been awhile since we got DTS-HDMA decoding, that people didn't think we were going to get. There are a sufficient number of players available now that can bitstream, so now would be a good time for them too pull the rabbit out of their hat and show us all how the PS3 can Bitstream as well.

to me it would make sense that a dedicated receiver made to do sound would handle decoding sound better than the PS3. Whether there is any difference, i probalby couldn't tell. But i would really like to be able to bitstream the audio from the ps3. that is the only negative thing i have with the ps3 right now.

Decoding is Decoding, end results is the same. Louder is not better. Negative??? I like the fact that I did not have to spend another $1000 to get a new reciever just for HD audio. Also the fact that the amount of HD reciecers was minimal at the time the PS3 came out.

For all you that like to see the logo....press display on your PS3 remote, you can SEE "DolbyTrueHD" or "DTSMA7.1" Thats enough for me.

don't get me wrong but can someone explain to me why does the ps3 have hdmi1.3 version?
I mean, isn't the purpose of that version to be able to bitstream hd audio?
If the ps3 had version 1.2 it could still pass the MPCM audio as it does know right ? so what is the benefict of this? Only picture quality or sony has a secret ?

HDMI 1.3a also supports deep color.
