Well, guys, finally got around to watch Dune in 3D. The 3D playback was lame at best. There were moments in the movie that you could tell 3D was working, but extremely limited. I've watched this movie many, many times over the years and have a pretty good idea of the 2D quality. When I watched the 3D version, I actually could NOT tell the difference from 2D and 3D. This is a huge disappointment. You would think that it would take some time to put forth some quality into the 3D conversion, but did not. This looks like no more than using a video application (HINT: DVDFab) to convert 2D to 3D. Wasted $16 on this one.

Rating 5 being best, 1 being a stink job

3D
  • Depth: 1
  • Pop-outs: 0 (not even a 1)
You can use the same ratings as 2D and get the results for the rest of the variables.

You would think that technology would finally catch up with 2D/3D conversion, but I guess it depends on how much money to put into the kitty to get the job done right. This one must have been done over a keg of beer, because it sure ain't worth getting your hopes up over this one.

I wonder if I put the U.S. BD in my player and then converted it to 3D with my TV if it would look better than the 3D disc you purchased.

It might, but don't count on it being decent viewing. I've tried that several times with other blus, such as Star Wars, Star Trek, and a few other ones. What happens is that the screen attempts to mimic the 3D process by shifting the colors slightly (this is to fool the left and right eye) so that the appearance of 3D effects are in the works, but what I have observed is when looking at a part of the screen that is not the center focus, for instance, something off to the side, you'll see plenty of ghosting. So for me, I keep getting more and more 3D blus, but the native 3Ds are the best results. Conversion, from my experience have yet to mature into a solid investment for our collectable blus.

Hey if you do decide to check out the 2D convert to 3D on your groove tube, let us know what you think.

Oh, BTW, the only thing that I can actually express about Dune 3D, is the bragging rights of having the blu-ray movie, which ain't saying much.

Sounds great. Now we have to wait nearly a month. If it turns out to be an upscale I will continue to rely on the 2.39:1 SD version found in the U.S. DVD steelbook.

BTW guys, don't get the Dune 3D version. The 3D if flat as my flat screen TV. If you have a TV that supports the ability to display 3D during playback of a 2D, then save your money and watch this in the TV 3D mode. Don't buy the 3D version of this movie. That would be a waste of good money that should have been spent on your girlfriend, drugs, beer or whatever else trips your trigger and it ain't worth waiting a month to find out the 3D totally is lame on this one.

I did a comparison and here is what I noticed during playback on both 3D and standard 2D being displayed as 3D.

The difference is nothing. I could not tell the difference between the 2D being played in 3D mode or the 3D blu-ray ERUO. Guess I was counting on the improvements that have been made in the past couple of years in conversions from 2D to 3D too much.

Note to self, wait until the movie comes out with a hologram version before shelling out beer money.

What about this? http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/B00VDUUBWS

Seems to include the tv-version in 4:3 version and many bonuses.

I wonder if the US PQ can be beaten and that sound is very good already. They state: Japan's first Blu-ray of using the latest HD Master & 5.1ch sound !!
2 main HD master, to perform additional restoration in Japan, a further image quality up realization !!

Also wondering how all alien language will be handled, english subs?

As far as I know the latest master was struck in 2006 by Universal, which is on the current U.S. BD. That same master was used for the theatrical scenes of the extended cut on DVD. The deleted scenes don't look quite as good, but it's still the best we have and in the proper ratio. If there was a new master struck it certainly slipped in under the radar.

There is always a possibility. Japan have made own transfers before.

That's true with Groundhog Day being the most recent example.

Subtitles aren't usually hardsubbed on blu-ray. They may be forced, but not hardsubbed.

I wasn't aware Groundhog Day got a new master. Is it available on any other release yet aside from Japan?

The DE transfer is an upscale and in 1.33:1. We are waiting on the JP release, which is 8/4/15. Hopefully, we will finally get a proper 1.85:1 HD transfer of the extended TV cut.

Just as I remembered when I first saw it. It was great. I'll get more details later and update the thread guys. But if you're on the fence about getting this one, don't be. I very glad I got it.
