I picked up the region free Fright Night & Rains of Ranchipur blus, from Amazon Germany. I think I paid about $10 for Rains of Ranchipur. Glad I held off on the German copy of Journey To The Center Of The Earth, as TT just announced it's re-release. JTTCOTE would've been almost $50.

I like the region free blus, I have two region free DVD players, don't want to shell out for a region free blu-ray player just yet.

Not sure about which was #2. They DO have a region free version at Amazon Germany. Sadly, Christine was one of the 80s horror movies, I just never really got into. I enjoyed The Car a little more.

Missed out again because...again...this damned website made no mention that it was a limited release! When this was announced, all it said was that it would be generally released on January 20. Why say that if the release can never happen because it is limited and will already be sold out LONG BEFORE the "release date"?

Why limit release to begin with and force everyone to have to constantly check websites, FB pages, etc., on the odd chance once every few YEARS that a movie you like might choose to release a few more limited copies?! There is nothing that prevents them from releasing the damned thing like everyone else does with all other movies! A limited release actually keeps the studio from making money and only benefits scalpers!

I definitely disagree. When something is limited, it's definitely going to sell out. That's 100% guaranteed movement. Not a stupid business move at all.

Not sure what Sony was thinking, when they agreed to let so many GOOD titles, get this method of release. Fright Night, Journey To The Center Of The Earth, the Sinbad movies of the 70s, The Blob (1988), Mysterious Island (1961), list goes on & on, just weird.

Now they're doing the same to First Men In The Moon!!

basically they don't CARE anymore about catalogs. due to some really bad business decision Sony home video is NOT doing so well financially and anything that isn't a sure fire hit is pretty much shelved. thus catalog titles go to TT and other studios because they get paid cash with no risk

I disagree. They sellout of 3 to 5 thousand online. But they might sell much more via online and brick & mortar stores. Of course it will sell when you only have two or so websites selling 3 to 5 thousand. But they still have many other titles, that were released years ago, that are still sitting there.

As of today, Fright Night has sold 8,000, imagine if Sony had released it.

And how is releasing only another few thousand copies at twenty bucks or so each making the studio more money than releasing and selling tens of thousands of copies at the same price in stores worldwide like everyone else? This movie was already limited released a few years ago and instantly sold out then, too. So they knew then how popular it is. Why the same marketing gimmick, now? Again...This only makes money for scalpers, as already seen in this thread alone with everyone buying extra copies to re-sell for hundreds apiece.

If Sony had released it through regular channels, they'd be lucky to have sold 8,000. The only reason these titles move as many so quickly is because of their limited nature. And even 8,000 units sold, or even 10,000, is very small potatoes for Sony and not worth their effort.

EDIT: And why are people still bringing up brick-and-mortar stores? Where are all these brick-and-mortar stores? Best Buy, with their tiny ever dwindling movie section will never carry any of these titles. Barnes and Noble, good luck there as well. Target or Walmart for deep catalog, forget it. Maybe Amoeba, what in 3 whopping locations? B&M is dead.

Sony would probably have to sell 10+ times as many copies to make as much as they did with TT, and it would take years. People act like Sony would get $20 from a copy sold in a wide release. They'd get chump change after everything is accounted for. They're getting premium right now from TT, and it's instant money, not monthly or quarterly accounting over the course of years.

People seem to also forget how dead B&M is right now for selling movies. Stores like BB likely don't want FN on their shelves, and even if they did, it'd be like 1 or 2 copies tops. So that leaves places like Amazon to sell the bulk of copies, and they just wont move titles as quickly as some here think. The main reason so many copies went in so little time is because it was a limited edition, plain and simple.

Well we'll never know how many Sony WOULD have sold, would we?

Because places like Target, Walmart, Costco, etc. exist, and I see lots of people buying movies at these places. Believe it or not, some people LIKE purchasing movies, that they can pickup at their local store.

I myself purchase my movies online mainly, but I also like to stop in a store, browse & pickup a few titles.

Shockingly enough Barnes & Noble stocks a huge amount of catalog Sony Blus usually always with sale prices. They are usually in sections under discount banners. Still Sony has just about all but given up on older catalog titles. Shocked that something like John Carpenter's Vampires wasn't release dying for the TT U-Turn that has been one of my BLU holy grail titles since BLUs started coming out.

But yeah Best Buy stocks hardly anything anymore. If it isn't a huge hit movie or a new release that store is not worthwhile as much anymore. Sad really I liked browsing for titles years ago.

This pretty much sums up why Sony deals with TT...

Nick Redman - “Almost immediately…but let me give you another example – not from Sony. We were told about a movie that had been a big box office success – one of the biggest, actually, and when it came out on DVD it had sold something like 4 million units. So the studio that owned the rights thought they’d put out a Blu-ray. So they went to their retailers and asked how many copies they’d like. You know what the answer was? One copy per store. Now let’s just say all of the other chains agreed to take one copy each too, and let’s say that totaled 10,000 units.

Under the old third party agreement the studio could effectively expect between 30 to 40 percent of units to remain unsold, and unsold to be returned to them. So that’s 4,000 units back - if you’re lucky. And selling 6,000 units for which the studio might expect to get somewhere around 70 cents per disc. That’s just one reason why even some of the bigger titles in a studio’s back catalogue, like say Sleepless in Seattle (1993) have come to us instead of going into brick and mortar retailers. And I have to say, we’ll take them. We’ve got everything now; musicals dramas, comedies.

My Best Buy, thankfully still stocks a lot of stuff, and they move a lot of titles. My local BJs however, sucks in the movie area.
