At least they limited sales to 3 per customer. Imagine if this limit weren't in place? People would have bought a dozen or two to re-sell. Ideally they should limit sales to 1 per person until the release date. While this would suck for someone trying to buy another as a gift for someone etc it would allow more people who actually covet the movie for themselves to get one.

Pretty amazing that it sold this quickly with an extra 2000 copies available, after there was already 3000 units out there, despite alternative international releases out there, and with purchasing limits in place.

I have to wonder if they could have sold out 10000 units? 12000 units?

Perhaps TT should consider going up to 8000 units on some of their future re-releases.

Again, I feel bad for others who tried to procure a FN for themselves and were unable to. I am happy that I was finally able to snag one this time around.

I think horror/sci-fi fans tend to "collect" movies a lot more than others... seems like titles like The Blob, Fright Night, Christine, Rollerball, etc all seem to have people in a panic mode to get them asap whenever TT starts offering them....

John Carpenter's Vampires is available in HDX on Vudu. I know most people on here are all about physical, but at least Sony supports digital for their catalog titles so there's other options. Pretty sure every TT bd release from Sony is also available in HD on Vudu.

Thankful I could finally get a copy. I've changed my buying habits the last 6 months and it seems to allow me to buy more titles with the same money. I'll wait til Black Friday for the big titles and use the savings to buy the niche more expensive stuff. It works in the long run and I didn't really need to own a movie like Edge of Tomorrow day and date after all.

That is a pretty interesting article, but I'd like a little more info about that comment, such as the name of this "big title"? I find it a little hard to believe that this "big title" can sell 4 million dvds, yet this mystery retailer on wanted 1 copy per store, meaning a couple thousand units? Give me a break.
While I don't disagree with Redman, methinks he's embellishing just a wee bit to further his point.

I have to agree with you (shocking outside of the Star wars thread isn't it? )... Redman's been caught twisting his statements this way and that over the years so it wouldn't surprise me if a little "embellishment" is going on there. no businessman is gonna come out and say "yeah, the stores wanted a BUNCH, but we just outbid the next studio who was going to release this one".... they're gonna make it seem like they're the best pony in town.

I get that he wanted to drum up business, and sometimes you have to "sell the audience", so I can't fault him for that. But I find it very hard to believe that a "big title", especially seeing as that article was written in 9/13 he could be referring to a summer blockbuster. If that's the case, no way it only sells 1 unit per store, OR that the retailer(probably Best Buy) only orders that much. Heck, BB does several thousand units in steelbooks alone, and that's very niche!
When he mentions online forums, you can bet that he's talking about this site. So if he does follow this site, I'd love to know what release he was talking about.
All in all, it was a pretty interesting article!

NOW, I'll be waiting to disagree with you in the SW thread(s).

I think Redman was speaking of a DVD title that was a huge seller at that time but as the years have passed the popularity drops and so does most stores interest in selling the title. Just think of a hot title from say 1999 it is no longer hot today. In fact some we can't even get a BLU release for.

This has happened a lot. This has been the issue with many TV show releases, and why many were delayed or not finished because stores show no interest and some labels don't want to rely on just amazon. (I think at least if amazon gets a title it will sale decently)

Fright Night would sell in stores, but obviously not to Sony's liking, so they go with Twilight Time. Twilight Time puts out a new version because it's a guaranteed sell out that helps subsidize the stuff that will never sell out.

Many would consider something like "As Good As it Gets" a "big" title and I'd imagine that is the type of title that Redman is referring to. People seem to forget that we're talking about catalog titles on Blu-Ray. The market for these releases is going to be someone who is interested in the movie who never bought it on DVD or someone who wants to upgrade their DVD. For most titles, that isn't going to amount to a huge number of people.

Would retailers want to put "As Good As it Gets" on their shelves? It made almost 150 million domestic. It was nominated and won academy awards. Yet, I don't doubt for a second that it would be under-ordered by retailers.

Of course, one may wonder what the difference is between WB and Sony when WB finds value in releasing a catalog title like "The Avengers" while Sony won't release "As Good As it Gets" or "Sleepless in Seattle" in the U.S. without licensing out to a third party. I'd love to know how much WB can make off of something like "The Avengers" and compare that to what Sony is getting for these TT titles. I would be surprised if there is one B&M retailer selling "The Avengers".

yeah, simple business tactics.... but I think part of it is because Nick and his partner HONESTLY have been trying to sell their business model on the mantra that physical is nearly dead and they are the last bastion type of thing. they even said when they started the company that the name "twilight time" was an ironic name because they believed it to be the "twilight" of physical media. thusly the "title" they are talking about was chosen to accentuate their point and drum up demand for the limited edition model

When Sony makes a deal with TT, I wonder if they get a fee upfront for the 3000-5000 blu rays? Or only if they sell out?

I would think that Sony would be digging around their back catalog looking for 70's-90's genre stuff since that seems like a slam dunk for both of them. And as Fright Night is proving you can cash in 3 years later again.

The one problem I have with stores like Wal-Mart or Best Buy is that sometimes they'll have a title you want, or may not even know you wanted but you've gotta swim in the dump bin like Uncle Scrooge from Ducktales taking a swim in his money bin to find what you want.

I'd be curious what title and studio that was from. No matter what store I've been too I've always seen more than one copy of a given title.

If Redman is comparing a dvd that sold during the height of the dvd boom to a potential BD sale in 2013, that's just even more of a headscratcher! We all know dvd just fell into the "perfect storm" of events to be wildly successful. Most industry experts, and pundits, had a feeling that BD(when it finally won the format war) couldn't come close to replicating those great dvd selling years.
Again I'm not disagreeing with Redman, not at all. We, BD enthusiasts, see these "warning signs" for catalog releases every year. Which is why, every year, I'm extremely happy with what I can get.

Same here. I keep hearing how BBY is downsizing but I've yet to see any shrinkage in the local BBYs I've visited over the past 5-6 years.

The German version has a bit more grain from those caps, perhaps enhancing the detail ever so slightly in some small areas. But the difference is really almost negligible to my eyes.
