"The Bud Selig Experience"... this might be the most boring idea ever. Since he's the father of steroids does that mean there will be a giant syringe over the entrance to the exhibit?

http://m.mlb.com/news/article/104138...lig-experience

Quote:
Allan H. "Bud" Selig was going to be a history professor before baseball stole his heart, so the Brewers' latest tribute to their founder was right on the mark.

The "Selig Experience," to open at Miller Park during the 2015 season, will be a 1,400-square-foot year-round attraction anchored by a 3D video presentation depicting Selig's start in the game and tenure as Brewers owner. At the center of that story is Selig's campaign to bring big league baseball back to Milwaukee in 1970, and his parts of three decades at County Stadium before ascending to the Major League Baseball Commissioner's Office.

"I'm grateful, because what if I'd failed?" said Selig, who is retiring as Commissioner next month. "None of us would be here today. None of this would ever happen. You think of all the lives impacted, and I'm just grateful to be a part of it."

The exhibit will be constructed on the loge level inside Miller Park, and it will be free to fans. It will be open during home games, accessible in the offseason during ballpark tours and available for some private events. Brewers COO Rick Schlesinger said the club is aiming for a grand opening in May or June.

It is part of the Brewers' ongoing effort to honor their founder as he prepares to step down as Commissioner. A statue of Selig already stands outside Miller Park, and in September, the Brewers said they would forever retire the No. 1 in his honor.

"Because of him, we are here," Schlesinger said. "I just thought it was a great story. ... There's great highs, great lows, and there's one constant -- the Commissioner who refused to be beaten."

Schlesinger conceived the idea for the mini-museum during a visit to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, where he was "mesmerized" by a multimedia exhibit depicting Lincoln's life. Schlesinger learned that it had been developed by BRC Imagination Arts, which will now work with the Brewers and Selig in the coming months to develop a show that builds to a 3D encounter with Selig himself, inside an authentic reproduction of his County Stadium office. It uses a technology found in only a handful of exhibits around the world.

LOL... no doubt the Rangers got a good laugh out of this. Unless The Angels were willing to eat almost all of the remaining contract there's no way Texas would even consider this.

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/mlb-bi...194547799.html

Quote:
"So I have a splendid idea. Do you remember how great Josh Hamilton was in a Rangers uniform? I heard y'all down there in Texas are interested in trading for an outfielder. Well, I got just the guy — Josh Hamilton. And he's still playing baseball, so it seems like an ideal fit. Whaddya say? We'll throw in a pair of Mike Trout's cleats!"

We imagine the Los Angeles Angels calling the Texas Rangers, asking if they'd like to get Josh Hamilton back in a trade, sounded something like that. Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reports that the Angels tried to shop Hamilton recently to the Rangers, for whom he played from 2008-12 and had that 2010 MVP season.

The Rangers' response probably went something like this:

"Sorry, we've got our share of overpaid injured dudes down here in Texas. But we'll be sure to laugh about this later."

The Rangers — for as many things as they might need — certainly don't need Hamilton again. He signed a five-year, $125 million contract with the Angels before the 2013 season and has largely been a bust. He hit .250 in 2013. He was pretty good to start 2014, but then was injured for a stretch, and returned with zero mojo at the end of the season. Meanwhile in Texas, fans hated him when he left but now are probably happy he's gone.

"What to do with Josh Hamilton?" is a legitimate question for the Angels, since he's owed $83 million over the next three seasons. Rosenthal reports the Angels shopped him to two teams so far this offseason — the Rangers and the San Diego Padres. There were no significant talks after that. The Padres would have to be insane to take on both Josh Hamilton and Matt Kemp.

Hamilton's got a full no-trade clause, and after getting loudly booed in his return to Texas and then insulting the fans I doubt he'd waive it even if the Rangers were willing to take him back.

The Dodgers trade of Matt Kemp to the Padres is in jeopardy over issues with Kemp's physical, with some reports saying Kemp failed the physical. The teams will meet today to discuss the deal. It's unlikely the deal will completely fall apart, and the most likely result is the Dodgers will cover more of Kemp's salary.

Grifters gonna grift. Amazing how some people make millions of dollars for literally doing nothing. Who are they fooling with this "Commissioner Emeritus" title nonsense?

http://deadspin.com/report-mlb-will-...han-1673315770

Quote:
Bud Selig will officially retire as MLB Commissioner on Jan. 25. At that exact moment, he will ascend to a higher plane of existence: a cushy-*ss sinecure.

Commissioner-elect Rob Manfred announced today that Selig will be named Commissioner Emeritus upon stepping down. What does a Commissioner Emeritus do? Selig will, per MLB.com, "be available to advise Manfred and assist with special projects."

ESPN's Buster Olney reports that Selig will receive an annual salary of $6 million, though it's not clear if that number includes deferred pay. An MLB spokesperson disputed the $6 million figure, but rest assured, Bud's not going to need help scraping together admission to the Bud Selig Experience.

Well this is bizarre. Never heard of anything like it before.

Nationals Trade For Prospect Who Is Stuck On The Padres Until June

Baseball is weird, and its weirdness has claimed another victim. This time, it's Nationals, er, Padres shortstop Trea Turner. Turner was traded from San Diego to Washington in the three-team, 11-player Wil Myers trade. But Turner can't join the Nats until mid-June.

Here's Ken Rosenthal with the explanation:

Major League Baseball rule 3(B)(6) states that a drafted player cannot be assigned to another club for one year after signing his original contract. Thus, Turner must spend spring training and the first part of the season with the Padres, knowing he has been traded.

...

The official announcement by the clubs, in accordance with the rules, referred to Turner only as a "player to be named." But a number of media outlets, including FOX Sports and baseball's official website, MLB.com, reported that he was part of the deal.

Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo acknowledged to reporters Friday that the situation is virtually unprecedented, but said the teams are "going to trust each other and do what's right by the player."
Turner is not some insignificant prospect. He was the 13th overall pick in the draft last year, and could play short for the Nats within a few years. Turner's agent, CAA's Jeff Barry, has vowed to fight the archaic rule.

"Regardless of the sham press releases being put out by teams, there is no Player to be Named, there is only the player already named, and that player is Trea Turner," Berry said.

"Trea is one of the top prospects in baseball and on a fast track to the major leagues," Berry said. "In this case, the plan to 'trust us' is not enough when it comes to a player's well-being and career.

"Given the circumstances and the undoubtedly negative impact on Trea Turner, for the teams involved and Major League Baseball to endorse and approve this trade is not only unethical, but also goes against the very spirit of the Minor League Uniform Player Contract that players sign when they first enter professional baseball. That contract requires a player to 'serve the club diligently and faithfully.' Shouldn't the clubs and the controlling parties at Major League Baseball be held to the same standard?"

Is there no unwritten rule that supersedes this nonsense?

Hall of Fame decision today. According to a poll of roughly 1/3rd of actual HOF voters Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez and John Smoltz are all shoe-ins. They all have >87% of the votes according to the HOF voter poll. Craig Biggio is also expected to make it with 83% in the poll taken.

The question mark is Mike Piazza. The poll of HOF voters has him at 76% - barely over the 75% threshold. I'm thinking he falls a few points short considering these polls more often than not exaggerate their actual result by a few points.

Tim Raines and Jeff Bagwell are still stuck in the low-mid 60's and won't make it.

In my dream scenario, Biggio and Bagwell go into the HOF together. I think people still question if Bags used any PEDs so only Biggio gets in and hopefully that happens today.

I get leaving people out in cases where there is legit evidence they used PED's - Bonds, Clemens, etc. But I hate it when they do it to people where there's absolutely nothing on them like Bagwell and Piazza. It sort of turns into a witch hunt when people deserving of making the HOF are left out purely out of suspicion over their physique. Weird Frank Thomas got the benefit of the doubt but not so many others.
