Yes exactly. The encoder I believe they use is known to alter things when it should not.

I would. If it's not genuine to the master, it's a huge issue.

Are we talking a dynamic brightness/contrast "feature" ?

No. Not to be too technical, I'm referring to an encoder that improperly handles RGB to YUV conversions.

OK...OK so the answer. TT is now using a different facility for compression and authoring from when Fright Night was first released in 2011. Since it's been confirmed by TT that they are using the same master, there's no argument here when I say this. The new facility is using an inferior encoder with known problems and I believe I even know which encoder. That's based on the discussion here, the screenshots I've seen, and a little bit of knowledge that I can't publicly share. And to the argument of the 2011 release not being as sharp as the 30th anniversary release, it's all about bit rate. I guarantee it has nothing to do with filtering being applied to the 2011 release.
You mention bit rate. The 2011 release, even though it has a lower average bit rate, it is also highly variable. Do you think it is encoded more efficiently?

Yes. The best BD encoders (and DVD encoders for that matter) allow you to specify how variable a variable bit rate can be. With a lower bit rate, you generally set it to be more variable so bits are saved for when they are needed.

I don't know much about specifics of transfers. Charlie's car's red paint looks correct in the light source of those scenes when I watched it.

I'm sorry, but I notice macroblocking so infrequently that u can't even recall the last Blu-ray I watched that had any. Can someone point me to a release that's 100% free of all macroblocking?

Arrow has films that were greatly encoded. Cinema Paradiso, The Fury, Time Bandits, Withnail & I to name a few.

Sadly I don't own any of those and they're not really on my wish list.

Another Sony title is due out through TT in April. The Remains of the Day. This title has already been released in U.K. via Sony and I believe the same Master is being provided to TT so it'll be interesting to see if there is a difference there if in fact they go through the same authering house.

Interesting, as I've considered importing The Remains of the Day.

I don't like blaming a "bad encoder" for the coloring since there is also more grain. I guess that could just be the result of less compression, but... obviously it was well encoded to get all that grain detail. I think the colors look better here, in comparisons, and looked great in motion. Oh well, I am sure people will be arguing this for years like Dracula or Thief and all the rest.

In any case I think it looks great and that's all that matters.

After looking closely at screenshot comparisons, I think that the Sony international release has the best picture.

Just one question, are all the Sony releases from last year identical? Everyone mentions the German version, but there are cheaper options from other countries.

Thanks in advance.

Hey guys! New to the forums here, but I wanted to jump in on the 30th Anniversary discussion... Has anybody watched the EPK that supposedly runs almost feature-length?

Thanks!

(Well, longtime member, first-time poster!) :P
