Didn't even know they've "been rebooting" the film franchise for the past four years.

That two years ago the movie was supposed to be out early 2013, and the game was to be Q3 2012, funny.

Deadline reports that Evan Daugherty has been chosen to write Tomb Raider, the upcoming reboot being developed by MGM and producer Graham King. Joining them though is Warner Bros., and they will distribute the film (which doesn't have a release date as of right now as it's obviously still in the very early stages of development). Daugherty has a varied and lengthy list of past projects, including Divergent, the upcoming G.I. Joe 3, Snow White and the Huntsman, and last year's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Tomb Raider movies which starred Angelina Jolie grossed over $400 million worldwide combined, and with moviegoers demanding more strong female characters, this property should now find a lot of success. It's mentioned that the reboot is being put on the fast track and that it will feature a much younger Lara Croft on her first adventure.

I think there's a lot of success to be had in a loose adaptation that is more "Bond/Indiana Jones as a woman" in style.

Isn't "Indiana Jones as a woman" pretty much what the games were always about?

Reboots are not always a bad thing. It is a case by case scenario.

Maybe the earlier games, but I'd argue that the last one was much more than that.

I would hope the movies would go the same way, but with the TMNT writers involved, I'm guessing any notion of an actual story and character-building will go right out the window.

I was referring to the TMNT writer being hired for it. That movie sucked.

I've not seen the new Ninja Turtles yet so I can't exactly comment on the screenwriting quality, but it does strike me as odd that the producers have ditched the Children of Men writers for this Evan Daugherty dude.

Yeah, I haven't played the last one yet so I wouldn't be able to judge, I never really did get into this franchise. I played bits of the first and third games as a kid but never finished them, then I got the Legend-Underworld trilogy and have gone through it once so far. But I've wanted to revisit the originals (at least the first three) and I'm curious about the reboot, I've heard good things about it.

The thing about screenwriters for nine figure budget movies is that they're hired guns who do what they're told. He may be good but was hindered by what Michael Bay and company wanted with TMNT. Or he may be desirable for Tomb Raider precisely because he's a yes man.

I'd like for them to get the current voice actress for Lara in the games, but I doubt they would get her.

A realistic choice would be Hayley Atwell. She already has fanboy cred and she can act pretty well. She is actually British unlike a lot of fan picks.

Oh yeah, the rebooted 2013 game is a must-play. It does have all the right elements - myth, archeology, adventure, fighting, etc - but it's a lot more hardcore, and Lara is a much more fleshed-out character, rather than just being all looks and butt-kicking. It's highly recommended.

Maybe, but the first two movies didn't have that kind of tone. They were more silly and over the top, felt like video game movies. I think the character has potential if they make it more serious and film focused.

I would not expect great things from this writer based on his filmography (Snow White and the Huntsman, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles)
now wait for the director and main actress
