It should output the full range, my Samsung player (the oldest), just doesn't have the option.

Mine has an "RGB" option but it doesn't say full or limited, just "RGB." I tested it and I don't see any black crush, so I am guessing it is RGB limited? I dunno. Picture looks identical to the ycbcr.

Just to clarify for anyone else, like me, who can't fully follow the tech talk on the past page or two about TV outputs and such.

Unless I'm mistaken, the black crush on the affected BDs cannot be altered by any of the various methods people have been talking about.

The black crush is baked into the disc. There is no data in the dark areas.

The only solution for these films is for the discs to be remastered and re-released.

Yes, the black crush is baked into the discs already.

(The other guys are just talking about ways of simulating black crush under various scenarios. )

How sad is it that we now see the "4K Mastered" label and shudder with fear? lol

Since it's a regular Sony title and not a Sony Classics title, does that mean maybe they corrected the ongoing technical mistake in their pipeline? The next couple of releases will tell.

Then the big hurdle is still getting these defective discs redone...

Here's an interesting article talking about Broadcast (Rec 709) and RGB levels. And yes, as the article mentions, sometimes crushed blacks and blown highlights are intentional.

I agree on the catalog titles, but I'm still guardedly hopeful on THE INTERVIEW and FURY, just because they're so recent and I'm hoping it'll be possible for me to get the filmmakers to complain, as I did with FRANTIC. I've been doing my best.

I can't find any mention of Sex Tape, I watched it yesterday, it definitely has crushed blacks, although the PQ isn't as bad as the actual movie. The review on this very site states this also:

"Sex Tape's 1080p transfer sometimes looks great, sometimes look less-than-stellar. The image favors an evident warmth that goes downright hot in places, with skin tones appearing ablaze in some spots. Black crush is frequent, and several scenes favor a heavy-handed shade of deep purple instead. Details range from flat and pasty to excellent. Those warmer scenes tend to look a bit messy, but the image produces good, clean, accurate details across the board in brightly-lit situations. The HD video source, then, seems all over the map. The image never looks awful, but its problems -- particularly those unsightly black levels -- keep it from the usual excellence seen in Sony titles."

Unconditional love does not exist.

God is a social construction.

McDonalds is slowly killing you.

Black crush on Fury will never be fixed.

Embrace the nihilism!

Wow, that one is much earlier than this batch. There are titles, like THE EQUALIZER, released before this ongoing problem, that look fine. SEX TAPE does look hideous, judging by the caps here, and seems to indeed a victim of black crush, but it might be a one-off.

Unfortunately, few people were actually paying attn to this BD b/c so many of us got it for free from the Sony Pictures Store.

I'll add it to the OP.

Yes. We've said this quite a few times now. And people don't seem to grasp it. No offense

It would really suck to have to import a BDP and foreign copies of movies to get the proper picture. I hope something happens.

I, too, think that the best bet is to see Fury and The Interview released somewhere Sony isn't doing it. I know about the Fury options and could easily remove any forced subs (unless of course they're "burned in" to the image).

We should accept that this effort is being put into avoiding these type of releases in the future. Unfortunately.
