Now that I've actually made screencaps I can see that my concern was correct: the Shout! Factory disc is softer than the Warner / MGM. (Look at the hair in cap 5.) You can also see some instances of clean-up in the first cap (what looks to me like a piece of debris mostly goes away, although it could be a scratch), and in Goose's spill.[/quote]

I am really not seeing that much difference in these. I think the Warner / MGM maybe looks a tad sharper than the Shout and that the Shout is a tad bit brighter than the Warner, but it's a very tiny difference I think.

Will keep my EFNY order though, I believe.
The tin is OOP. The trilogy is getting rereleased in a standard case in a couple of weeks.

Hmm. I might just buy that then if/when it goes on sale. I have the first version of Road Warrior without the fix, so I'd be killing two birds with one stone. The extras on the shout sound like they'll be worth the cost to me of having both versions, but yeah, all actual evidence so far from people that have the disc is that it is a legit downgrade.

It definitely seems to have a smidge less detail. I don't think it's a huge issue though, so far. Will need more caps to see just how bad it is.

Some of those foreign gas can tins (UK, Spain, etc) still seem to be floating around on eBay.

I do agree, but for someone without either version yet the Shout disc would be tempting as long as the difference isn't that big. I went with Shout's Halloween 2 disc for the features because the visual difference was very slight and isolated, for example.

It's a tough call unless better caps show a significant difference.

For those who are still deciding which to get (or if they wanna get both at a low cost), the MGM Blu-ray is only $5 at FYE right now with another purchase. I may still spring for the Scream Factory CE for the lovely artwork and new extras.

As for my additional purchase to get the deal :

So the original Halloween 2 had better PQ?

Slightly. There's a slight loss of detail in Scream's but there's additional cleanup. Pick your poison.

Regardless of opinions, beliefs, or what have you, why hasn't SF fixed the compression issues? The fact that this issue hasn't been addressed and fixed causes them to come off as they're not concerned with this issue. It's evident that SF still reads these forums whether or not they still post here.

I'm sure a few years ago they would've replied. Nowadays...eh, not so much.
A shame, no doubt about it.

It is a true shame but they still have the option of replying, or better yet, addressing the compression issues even without replying. But why didn't they reply, or address such concerns, in the past before writing off such criticism? After all, we do know they still read these forums.

Knowing small companies I would guess they are super defensive about it and don't see an issue. See how Twilight Time responded to the (100% objective) issues with Fright Night.

I wasn't following that discussion, since I decided to just keep the original release and don't bother with the second release. What did TT say?

I don't remember it well enough to quote, but they basically denied there was an issue when someone brought it up on Facebook and then made fun of the person mentioning it. Granted that person was being a dick about it, but still it was kind of embarrassing for everyone involved.

In my experience when you work for a small company everyone is very defensive and refuses to admit fault. With a large company like Warner they can admit fault and eat the replacement cost. Twilight and Scream cannot.

Regarding Scream's lack on comments on the compression issues, yes, it does indeed come off as lack of care, as someone suggested earlier. By now, there's no way they are not aware of it. It's pretty much been a consistent problem with them. I think the only logical conclusion is, they feel it's too minor an issue to do something about. And, hey, from a business point of view they may even be right. Most likely we are only a (somewhat vocal) minority who care about these things.

Personally, my response has been, whenever I have to choose between a new release from Scream or from, say, Arrow, I tend to choose the Arrow. But there are still Scream titles I just have to get, warts and all.

Judging by the Scream thread I think most of their fans are just thrilled to get the movies at all and crave the new packaging and supplements. Video quality doesn't seem to be their focus, with many of their biggest fans like Rickah outright saying it's "not Scream's business plan to focus on that" and similar comments.

It's weird to me, because video quality is my number one concern (within reason), but there ya go. I'm not making fun of those people either, just saying they have different priorities that baffle me but work for them, and that's their choice. All my real life friends are baffled by the idea of buying movies in general, so there's that.
